Newtown High School's softball team kept up its winning ways with two blowout victories in as many days - a 10-1 triumph at Bunnell of Stratford on April 27, and an 8-2 victory over visiting Weston the following afternoon.

The Nighthawks improved to 10-2 overall and have won six straight contests.

In the win over Bunnell, Newtown pitcher Sara Kennedy struck out 13 batters, and allowed only two base hits. Kennedy also contributed at the plate with a two-run double.

Newtown got a pair of home runs as Kamdyn Moroney and Tess Mubarek both hit two-run shots. Moroney also had an RBI triple, and Katie Laaksonen delivered an RBI double and a single. Alexandra Nuzzo contributed a hit and a run scored.

Against Weston, pitcher Lauren Wilcox fanned eight batters and allowed five hits. Weston seized a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Nighthawks came back with four runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Leadoff hitter Haley Ryan started things with a bunt single and scored on an error. Moroney belted a run-scoring double down the right field line, and Mubarek smacked a two-run single to center.

Newtown added two runs in the bottom of the second as Moroney blasted a two-run hit to left - one of her three doubles in the game - a two-out hit that drove in Kennedy and Laaksonen.

After Weston produced its second run, Kennedy tripled and scored on a Laaksonen sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Kennedy drove in a run with a groundout in the fifth. Mali Klorczyk delivered two hits in the win.

"It feels great when everyone's hitting," said Moroney, who is confident her Nighthawks will be able to successfully defend their South-West Conference championship from a year ago. "I think we're going to do very well this year."

Newtown has had a propensity to put runs on the board early on in games, something Kennedy appreciates both as a hitter and, even more so, as a pitcher.

"It takes a lot of the pressure off because you have some runs to fall back on just in case," Kennedy said.
