High School Cross Country

Anyone interested in running for the Newtown High School girls’ cross country team in the fall is asked to call Christine (426-3432), Megan (270-9661) or Sarah (270-1877) for further information.

Youth Football Clinic

The Newtown High School football program will host a youth football clinic for players ages 8 to 15 from July 22 through July 26. Clinic will run from 9 am to 11:30 am each day. NHS head coach Ken Roberts and members of his staff will conduct the clinic, which will cover conditioning, fundamentals, specialty skills and feature contact drills and a live scrimmage at the end. Players will be grouped by age, size, and ability. Equipment rentals will be provided for those who need it. Registration fee is $85 and all proceeds will benefit the Newtown Touchdown Club. Sandlot Tennis

The Newtown Tennis Association hosts Sandlot Tennis every Wednesday night, from 5 pm until dark, at Dickinson Park. Anyone looking for a game is invited to head down to the courts. Visit the website at www.ntaweb.com for further information.

ASA Softball Tournament

The Connecticut ASA (Amateur Softball Association) will hold the 2002 ASA Women’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship tournament August 16-20 in Stratford (at Deluca Field and Short Breach Park). Twenty-four teams from around the nation will compete in the double-elimination tournament. The Stratford Brakettes (who finished third last year) will return as the host team. Danbury Soccer Tryouts

A U14 boys’ premier soccer team, coached by Danbury High School and Western Connecticut University’s John Benitez,will have tryouts on Thursday, July 11, from 6:30 to 8 pm, at Kenosia Park in Danbury. For further information, call Helena Abrantes at 746-4023 or John Benitez at 798-7244.

Woodbury Ski & Skate

The Woodbury Ski & Skate Park is accepting bookings for its annual skate camps for skateboarders, inline skaters, and bikers. Camps will be held July 29 through August 2/4 and August 26 through August 30/September 2 (the camps can be five- or seven-day camps and cost is $299 for the five-day and $350 for the seven-day). Camps will run from 10:30 am to 6 pm and feature lessons, video analysis, and open skate sessions. To cool off, swimming will also be available. U13 Soccer Tryouts

Premier Soccer Tryouts

A U16 girls’ premier soccer team, coached by Fairfield University’s Marie Piechocki, will have tryouts on Saturday, July 13 (10 am at Redding Elementary). The team will be based out of Redding. Call Joe Scavo at 1-203-938-4117 for further information.
