The fields at St Rose of Lima School were filled with people mingling beneath tents on October 6, when the school hosted a Mass and Oktoberfest-themed celebration to commemorate 60 years of educating students in town.

The school opened its doors in 1958.

Past graduates, current students, and families were invited to attend the event to share memories of the school. The event’s tagline was “Remembering the Past, Relishing the Present, Rejoicing in the Future.”

Food, games, and a beer garden were part of the festivities for the event. Tours of the school were also provided by current students. Special school items marking the 60th anniversary were for sale, including a glass Christmas ornament.

St Rose of Lima School Director of Mission Advancement Laura Moulder said more than 300 people were expected to attend the event, and within two hours of the event opening its doors, more people were anticipated.

St Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church Pastor Monsignor Robert Weiss said the morning’s Mass was a “really beautiful celebration” of the school. A mix of alumni, students, and community members attended the Mass, including State Representative Mitch Bolinsky and Senator Tony Hwang, according to Msgr Weiss.

Reflecting on the saying that it take a village to raise a child, Msgr Weiss said a “village” certainly came out to attend the school’s celebration. He also said it meant a lot to him to hear community leaders recognize the school for its importance in the community.
