Swimming And Diving Team Posts Victories

Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team continued its winning ways and improved to 7-1-1 this campaign with a trio of victories this past week.

The Nighthawks defeated Joel Barlow of Redding 97-82 on October 10. The Nighthawks sealed the team win after the backstroke race and exhibitioned the final two events.

Newtown’s 200-yard medley relay team of Shayna Millard, Maddie Carter, Olivia Renkert, and Emma Riebe was first in a time of 2:05.28. Martha Seaver was second in the 200 freestyle race in a time of 2:17.56. Millard and Riebe gave Newtown a one-two finish in the 200 individual medley race with times of 2:28.36 and 2:31.24. Payton Bradley was first in the 50 free in 26.92. Renkert came in second in a time of 27.65.

In the diving competition, Kiera Sughrue was first with a score of 205.2. Kylie Giroux was second with a score of 188.05.

In the 100 butterfly race, Renkert took the top spot, making her final touch in 1:05.14. Millard was first in the 100 free in 59.05. The 200 free relay team of Seaver, Cate Fischer, Lianna Perazzo, and Norah Kolb was tops in 1:56.05. Riebe won the 100 backstroke race in 1:10.17, edging out Payton Bradley (1:10.78).

Newtown exhibitioned the 100 breaststroke race. The fastest times were turned in by Fischer (1:18.28) and Lily van der Kroef (1:19.37). The fastest time in the 400 free relay was turned in by Carter, Grace Bertsche, Riebe, and Millard (4:09.50).

The Hawks defeated visiting Immaculate of Danbury/Bethel 91-83 on October 12. The 200 medley relay of Riebe, Carter, Renkert, and Bradley was first in 2:02.10. Seaver won the 200 free in 2:16.89, and Bertsche was second in 2:18.32. Renkert and Kolb gave the Hawks a one-two finish in the 200 IM with times of 2:28.56 and 2:30.84. Bradley won the 50 in a time of 26.98.

Bethel/Immaculate diver Farrah Volpontesta set a Newtown High pool record with a score of 280.25. Sughrue was second in the competition with a score of 208.45.

Carter and Riebe finished one-two in the 100 fly with times of 1:03.78 and 1:08.86. Kolb was second in the 100 free in 1:01.39. Seaver took the top spot in the 500 with a time of 6:04.04. The 200 free relay team of Renkert, Olivia Grant, Carter, and Rachel Arena was first in 1:54.10. Newtown exhibitioned the final few events. Bradley had the best time in the 100 backstroke race, making her final touch in 1:11.87, and Emma Carson was second in the race in 1:15.19. Carter and van der Kroef finished with the top two fastest times in the 100 breaststroke with times of 1:15.91 and 1:19.20. The 400 relay of Riebe, Kolb, Renkert, and Bradley had the fastest time, clocking in at 4:09.92.

Newtown defeated visiting Masuk of Monroe 96-85 on October 16. The 200 medley relay of Millard, Carter, Renkert, and Bradley was first in 2:02.92. Millard was first in the 200 in 2:10.51. Renkert placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:26.13. Bradly won the 50 in 27.46. Sughrue earned second in the diving competition.

Carter won the 100 fly in 1:04.75. Renkert won the 100 free in 1:00.20. Bertsche was second in the 500 in 6:05.12. The 200 free relay team of Carter, Fischer, van der Kroef, and Kolb was first in 1:53.69. Millard placed second in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.90.

The Hawks exhibitioned the rest of the way. Carter was the fastest finisher in the 100 breaststroke race with a time of 1:13.64. The 400 free relay team of Renkert, Kolb, Bradley, and Millard had the best time, finishing in 4:06.97.
