Tennis Teams Blank Opponents

Newtown High School's girls' and boys' tennis teams both earned 7-0 wins on the road on April 16. The girls were victorious at Masuk of Monroe and the boys won at Stratford High.

In the girls' match, each of the top three singles players — Marie Ann Tomaj, Amanda Conrod, and Jen Lorenz — won 6-0, 6-0. At fourth singles, Amelia Hufschmied won by default.The doubles tandems of Julia Klein/Julia Dolan and Mary Celentano/Julia Clark both won 6-0, 6-0. The third tandem of Ava Berry/Adisa Gjonbalaj won by default.

On the boys' courts, most of the matches were eight-game pro sets. In singles play, Sam Cannizzo won 8-1, Stephen Dooley won 8-0, and Ben Futterman prevailed 8-1. There was no match at fourth singles.

In doubles action, Newtown's Luke Sposato and Chris Lindsay won 6-0, 6-0; Sachin Mansukhani and Matthew Weisgerber won 8-2, and Ben Ochs and Orion Bracksieck won 8-0.

In an April 11 match against Pomperaug of Southbury, Newtown fell 6-1 with the third doubles tandem of Weisgerber and Lindsay winning 6-3, 6-1. A pair of Newtown’s losses went to three sets.
