Principal Jo-Ann Peters continued in her annual tradition of reading the first chapter aloud at the kickoff assembly. Each Hawley family received a copy of the book, which had been donated by the PTA, and a home packet of activities designed by teachers to stimulate book discussions.

The festivities continued at an after-school family picnic sponsored by the PTA. Games at the picnic were focused around the book such as a moon bounce.

Throughout the month of October, students engaged in a variety of activities related to the book. They designed candy wrappers, invented candy making machines for the Willie Wonka factory, and drew and wrote about their favorite characters.

The halls of Hawley came to life with bulletin boards and projects related to Roald Dahl’s book. The entire staff participated by creating the discussion questions, artistically decorating the halls, coordinating Internet activities, and creating optional activities the students did at home with their families.

The culmination of the monthlong celebration was a schoolwide assembly where each class created and performed a song connected to the theme.

After school the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was viewed at Edmond Town Hall by staff, students and their families.

The event was not only a celebration of literature but of the Hawley home-school connection.
