Threatened Bridge Jumping Averted

About 5 pm on Thursday, July 12, during the evening rush, a 27-year-old man reportedly was threatening to jump from Rochambeau Bridge, alongside eastbound Interstate 84, into the waters of the Housatonic River.a fatal motorcycle accident had occurred at about 7 am that day, the two incidents were unrelated, according to state police at Troop A. The motorcycle accident investigation caused extensive travel delays during the morning rush.

State police said that troopers from Troop L in Litchfield were investigating the incident in which the man was threatening suicide. Troopers from the nearby Troop A Barracks in Southbury located the man, after which he was transported to the hospital by ambulance to be checked, state police said.

State police spokeswomen Kelly Grant characterized the incident as a "medical assist" for state police.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps initially was dispatched to the incident, but was unable to get there, so Danbury Ambulance responded to the scene. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company also responded.
