Three Newtown High School students, members of the Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras (GBYO),  are gearing up to perform as part of a Carnegie Hall concert set for December 5.

The event is called “Tim Janis — The American Christmas Carol,” and tickets for it went on sale October 11. Tickets are available online at www.CarnegieHall.org or by calling the Carnegie Hall box office, 212-247-7800; tickets range from $30 to $165.

The concert will be presented in the Stern Auditorium and performers will include Tim Janis, Jackie Evancho, Sir James Galway, Lady Jeanne Galway, Cindy Cruse Ratcliff, Lumiere, Conductors Matt Vanzini and Christopher Hisey, and Principal Orchestra members of GBYO.

As members of GBYO’s Principal Orchestra, NHS junior Nathyn Horvath, senior Kai Hedin, and sophomore Gemma Hyeon each said they are looking forward to the concert.

GBYO, according to Kai, includes students from around Fairfield and New Haven Counties, and participants are organized by skill level. The Principal Orchestra is the top level of six orchestras within GBYO.

Nathyn said he started playing with GBYO six years ago after Kai introduced it to him. Kai said he has been playing with GBYO for eight or nine years, since he was in forth grade. Gemma started two years ago, “because I just wanted to join an orchestra. I heard about GBYO, and I thought, why not?”

Each of the students said they have not played at such a “grand scale” event like the Tim Janis — The American Christmas Carol event at Carnegie Hall before.

GBYO members meet Saturday mornings from September through may, and there are three formal performances each year, according to its website.

Kai, Nathyn, and Gemma said they will be accompanying Jackie Evancho during the event’s performances.

“It’s a big deal for them to be invited, and to go there,” said Maria Horvath, Nathyn’s mother. “Not many people can say [they played at Carnegie Hall] at 16 years of age. So we’ll be looking forward to all that.”

Kai said the opportunity to play at Carnegie Hall is an honor.

“It’s a very prestigious place,” said Nathyn.

Nathyn plays cello and Kai and Gemma play violin. The musicians are also planning on touring China this summer with GBYO. The tour will take the students through three cities.
