Town Sanitarian John E. Goett this week said he believes that the local health department will treat the Department of Environmental Protection’s survey of failing septic systems in the center of town as a complaint. And since they will be viewed as complaints, the local health department apparently will investigate the more than 60 incidences of failing systems reported by DEP, and will require that property owners make corrections if they are warranted.

 Sharon Lynn MacDonald, 19, daughter of Mr and Mrs Elmer MacDonald of Hawthorne Hill Road, a tiny (5-foot, 3 inches, 106 pounds) Southern Connecticut State College sophomore, will contend for the title of Miss Connecticut June 30 and July 1 in New Britain High School.

 A group of local builders and subdividers have signed a petition calling for the Legislative Council to delay action on the proposed new road ordinance until after the group has had an opportunity to express itself on the matter.

The Class of ’78 became history Saturday as Superintendent of Schools Dr Albert Brinkman declared the block of high school students before him had complied with all diploma requirements. Parents, friends and relatives sat in bleachers or on grassy slopes above the Bruce Jenner stadium to watch the seniors receive their diplomas and walk into the next stage of their lives.

Dual-Lite has submitted an application to the Conservation Commission for permission to construct a parking lot for a 147,922 square foot proposed Corporate headquarters on the 13.3 acre McNamara property at the corner of Mill Hill and Route 25. The building is to be constructed in three phases and include a 4,528 square foot heliport.

Some had no complaints, but others were quite unhappy about the Board of Selectmen’s decisions on salary increases for non-union municipal employees, which were released Wednesday morning following a special meeting of the board. The fiscal year beginning July is the first in which the Town of Newtown will give non-union employees raises based on an evaluation of their performance, and the selectmen have spent several meetings in closed session review of department heads’ reviews of their employees.

The June luncheon of the International Club was held June 7 at the home of Sharon Bjornberg, Sandy Hook. At that time, plans were made for the upcoming July 8 pool party to be held at the home of Mr and Mrs Leonard Ross.

Four Newtown Girl Scouts will be broadening their horizons this summer as they have been selected to participate in the “Wider Opportunities” program offered by the Girl Scouts. The girls are Robin Gere, Jennifer Brown, and Lisa and Brenda Sandone.

Calling on townspeople to “share our good fortune with those who have less, to show impoverished children a better way of life,” Mrs Richard B. Gilpin of Sugar Street, a member of the Newtown Mothers Club committee for the New York Herald Tribune Fresh Air Fund, sought this week to place 13 more children from New York City in local homes for a two-weeks vacation to meet the committee’s quota of 24. One week remains for enlisted the aid of sponsors with the deadline set for next Friday, July 10.

The new officers of the Newtown Lions Club, elected and installed at the annual meeting Wednesday, June 24, are: president, Lynn Mathewson, South Center district; first vice president, George Kayhoe; second vice president, Elwood Scholl; third vice president, Louis Oetjen; secretary, William Bechert; tail twister, Kenneth Shaw; Lion tamer, William A. Honan, Jr; directors for two years, Charles J. Milot and D. Augustus Carey.

An electrical storm played tricks with the fire alarm system Wednesday evening and set the nerves of many town residents on edge. All of the town’s sirens except that at Edmond Town Hall sounded off one or more times from 8 to 10 o’clock, resulting in several calls to The Bee office asking “Where is the fire?”

Judge Walter A. Reynolds and Deputy Judge Edward S. Pitzschler, Prosecuting Attorney Joseph H.A. Symonds, and Assistant Prosecutor Carroll R. Eaton of the Newtown Town Court, began new two-year terms Wednesday, July 1, following their reappointment by Governor Lodge.

The Rev Paul A. Cullens, pastor of the Newtown Congregational Church, and party will sail Tuesday from New York City on the Vulcania, en route to Naples, Italy, and a summer’s motor tour of Europe and Scotland. With Rev Mr and Mrs Cullens will be their daughter, Miss Mary Cullens; Miss Betsy Birkett of Damariscotta, Me., Miss Cullens’ roommate at Wheaton College; Dr Duncan Stephens of Greenwich, formerly of the Fairfield State Hospital staff, and Mrs Stephens. The party will return by air during the first week of September.

Fire of undertermined origin destroyed a tool shed and farm machinery on the farm of David Steinfeld, Obtuse Road, Hawleyville, Wednesday morning. Firemen were unable to save the shed and machinery. The loss, estimated at $5,000 to $6,000, was partly covered by insurance, according to Fire Marshal Albert H. Nichols.

Michael Trimpert, son of Mr and Mrs Raymond J. Trimpert of Sugar Street, left Newtown on Sunday for the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. He was sworn in as a midshipman on Monday, June 27, by Adm Turner C. Joy.

The addition of a float from the Southbury Training School and a corps of busy clowns from Frederika House, Sandy Hook, to units already entered promises a varied and colorful spectacle for townspeople this Saturday morning, as Newtown’s Fourth of July parade, sponsored by the volunteer firemen, moves down Main Street and along Church Hill Road to Sandy Hook.

Rev Dr Gesner took three young people from St John’s parish to attend the Summer Conference of young people at Westminster School, Simsbury. The fortunate ones are Austin Dinkler, Eunice Curtiss, and Marjorie MacClymon.

Owing to the death of Commissioner Philo T. Platt, president of the Newtown Forestry Association, it has been decided to omit the annual summer public meeting. Commissioner Platt and the late Dr Charles H. Peck were the life and inspiration of this organization.

John Stefanko of Gas Street, Sandy Hook, injured one arm by being thrown from a mowing machine in the yard of his home, Monday afternoon. Two young horses were harnessed to the machine and halted, throwing Mr Stefanko off the machine to the ground.

The attendance at the session of the Congregational Sunday school, Sunday, was 104, the largest number at a regular session in ten years.

The case of State against George Marsh of Lake George district was tried before Justice of the Peace Patrick H. McCarthy on Saturday last, and resulted in his discharge. He was charged with cruelty to a horse owned by W.C. Peffers of Danbury.
