Track And Field Squads Compete In State Championship Meets

Newtown High School's girls' and boys' track and field teams competed in the Class LL state championships and State Open at Willow Brook Park in New Britain this week. The Class LL meet took place May 29-30; heavy rains forced the postponement of the later events to the second day. The Open took place on June 3.

In the Class LL meet, the Nighthawk girls had several top-ten finishes as the team placed ninth with 34 points; Danbury was first with 154. The boys were 21st with three points; Glastonbury won with 75.50. Top NHS results are as follows:

Carly Swierbut was second in the 100 meter dash in a time of 12.78. Swierbut placed third in the 200 in 25.74, and Elise Barricelli was 17th in the 200 in 27.25.

Ally McCarthy came in eighth in the 800 in 2:19.60. Courtney Henchcliffe came in 17th in the 1600 in 5:37.07.

Audrey Benson placed 14th in the 100 hurdles in 17.22.

The 4x100 relay team of Brianna Lovely, Barricelli, Reagan Schoen, and Swierbut placed eighth in 50.30. The 4x400 relay of Laura Wong, Sophie Guevara, Kathryn Garner, and Barricelli was 12th in 4:15.67. Newtown's 4x800 team of Maddie Fetchick, Alexandra Toth, McCarthy, and Guevara was fifth in 9:55.61.

Amy Sapenter placed sixth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-10, and Sarah Tressler was tenth in the event with a jump of 4-08. Juliette Cryder came in 13th, also clearing 4-08. Sapenter was 15th in the triple jump with a 32-03.25.

The Nighthawks had a pair of top-five efforts in the discus throw as Sarah Nowacki was third with a toss of 100-05, and Anna Burns came in fifth with a throw of 96-11. Heidi Alvarez came in 19th in the discus event with a throw of 74-10.

Nowacki was tenth in the javelin throw with a distance of 87 feet. Burns (79-09) and Jackie Matthews (79-02) placed 14th and 15th in the javelin throw.

Katie Ryan was tenth in the pole vault competition with a jump of 8-06.

Nowacki was 18th in the shot-put event with a throw of 28-09.50.

On the boys' side, the 4x800 relay team of Justin Halmose, Andrew Poseno, Evan Hildenbrand, and Nick Jacobs finished eighth in a season PR time of 8:26.16.

The 4x100 relay team (Thomas Hartley, Will Hampford, Tristan Andrew and Neil Coppola) got 16th place with a season PR time of 45.50.

Hartley came in seventh in the 300 Hurdles with a PR time of 42.37 and ninth in the 110 hurdles in 16.38. Andrew came in 16th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.10. Halmose got a PR in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:51.62.

In pole vault event, Aiden Jasinski and Samuel Edwards both had a final jump of 12 feet, earning 10th and 11th place. Bob Carroll (discus throw, 97 feet) and Miles Martiska (long jump, 19-06.50) both earned 13th place, and Grant Baker was 16th in shot put with a throw of 37-09.75.

In the final event of the day, the 4x400 relay team of Ben Nowacki, Jon Nahmias, Poseno, and Andrew finished in 14th place with a time of 3:43.50.

In the State Open, Swierbut was seventh in the 100 win a time of 12.38. The 4x100 relay was 12th in 50.52. The 4x800 relay was 11th in 9:54.25. Nowacki (98 feet) and Burns (97-05) were 18th and 20th in the discus throw.
