A section of Mt Pleasant Road near Johnnie Cake Lane was closed to through-traffic for several hours on Saturday, June 8, as police investigated a serious two-vehicle head-on collision.

Police said motorist Joseph Matthews, 31, of Naugatuck was driving a 2017 Nissan Altima sedan northward on Mt Pleasant Road, as motorist Gavin White, 24, of Stamford was driving a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV southward.

The two vehicles collided near Johnnie Cake Lane, resulting in heavy damage to both vehicles, police said.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported both drivers to Danbury Hospital for treatment of suspected serious injuries, police said. The regional paramedic and Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters also responded to the accident.

A Danbury Hospital spokeswoman had no information on June 12 on either man involved in the crash.

Following the accident, the police department’s accident reconstruction team went to the scene to conduct a detailed investigation of what had occurred. Traffic detours were in place while the on-scene evidence collection was underway.

The incident remains under investigation and police are seeking additional information or witnesses. Contact Lt David Kullgren at 203-270-4255.
