VNA Gives $10,000 To Health Clinic

Members of the Newtown Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) presented a check for $10,000 to Dr Z. Michael Taweh to help with the ongoing operation of Newtown’s free health clinic, Kevin’s Community Center, at Canaan House at Fairfield Hills.

The clinic, which provides free primary care services for Newtown’s uninsured and low-income residents aged 16 and older, is open every Wednesday from 1 to 5, staffed by Dr Taweh and other professional volunteers.

The clinic sees eight to ten patients each week and has a patient base of more than 60 individuals since it opened last August.

“This [many] in a town that thought they didn’t have a need for this clinic,” said VNA officer Christine Wiemels.

Last year the VNA also donated $10,000 as seed money to start up the clinic.

The VNA raises funds through its thrift shop at the rear of Edmond Town Hall. Last week it also donated two $4,000 scholarships to high school students who will study nursing in college. The VNA provides eye screenings in local nursery schools, maintains a free loan closet of medical equipment such as wheelchairs and crutches, holds flu and pneumonia vaccine clinics, awards a continuing education scholarship, and provides other services.
