Where Is The Common Sense?

To the Editor:

In reading the latest batch of letters to the editor, I can’t help but wonder where common sense has flown. One letter calling climate change evidence a fraud and several others in angst over the single use plastic bags ordinance makes me think we are living in medieval times where superstitions ruled the day.

About the plastic bags... Big Y announced they will stop using plastic bags by 2020, following the lead of several municipalities in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Greenwich, Westport, Stamford, Branford, and others have already weighed in on this issue. Newtown is certainly not the first. Costco offers neither plastic nor paper bags.

A statement from Big Y reads:

“According to a company press release, an estimated 100 billion single-use plastic bags are thrown away in the U.S every year and less than 5 percent of plastic bags are recycled.”

Just bring your own reusable bags. How simple can it be?

As for climate change, there will always be the naysayers until the impacts are impossible to ignore. Those of you who live in coastal areas can check FloodiQ.com to see what impacts there will be on any residence.

As the expression goes, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.”
