On the Courts — Basketball Highlights

Intermediate Boys 5th Grade

Celtics 24, Wolfpack 16: Jack Procaccini led the Wolfpack with 10 points and Nick Samuelson led the team in assists. Lucas LaDestro anchored the defense with some solid play while John Cagganello led the team in rebounds. James Frazzetta paced the Wolfpack with 8 points and Matt Stewart led the team in assists. Daniel Pearson played strong defense and Markus Wessel grabbed a majority of the rebounds.

Giants 25, Huskies 14: Tim Vander Have led all scorers with 12 points, while Declan Sullivan had several assists in the win. Matthew Ingwersen pulled down 8 rebounds and Shawn McCarthy led the defensive charge. The Huskies were paced by Robert Katrinak with 5 points, and Matt Meyers had 6 assists. Holden Turk played solid defense with a couple of steals and Nathan Williams helped on both ends with 6 rebounds.

Bruins 32, Knicks 6: Daniel McCarthy provided the offensive charge with 8 points getting help from Gordon Walsh, who led the team with several assists. All nine Bruins players scored in this game. Christian Thanasoulis sparked the defense with 7 steals and Andrew Svanda grabbed 7 rebounds. Knicks’ players Jeri Draper, Kyle Keeping, and Nick Genovese each scored 2 points to lead their team. Sam Duffy had a strong showing on defense with Delrossi, Kiley, Masser, and Barrett displaying a lot of heart and tenacity.

Nighthawks 17, Raptors 16: Nighthawks’ players Matt Davis and Charlie Fletcher had 6 points each to lead their team in scoring. Austin LeBlanc led the team with assists and David Anderson pulled down the most rebounds for his team. Colin Patrick was the high scorer for the Raptors with 5 points. Spencer Johnson had 5 assists. Andrew Ross had 5 steals on defense and Peter Winans grabbed the majority of the team’s rebounds.

Grade 5 Boys’ Travel

Newtown Chuckers 54, Wilton 28: The Chuckers were lifted by the defensive play of Devin Luzietti and Jamie Cochrane, while offensively Michael Doyle and Matt Gerics led a relentless attack. Matt Maturo was a rebounding force at both ends of the court.

Newtown Chuckers 36, New Fairfield 24: Josh Houle and Jared Pearson led a defensive effort that didn’t allow New Fairfield across half court for most of the first quarter. Alex Gerbo and Ethan Carpenter led the team with great inside scoring efforts, while Matt Elias played a strong overall game.

Girls Grade 5 Travel Basketball

Grade 5 Girls’ Travel

Newtown 25, Wilton 19: Alana Murray, Caitlyn Linden, Haley Ryan and Lauren Wilcox played well offensively.  Maren Brady and Kelly Merrick led the team in rebounds.

Newtown 38, New Canaan 9: Newtown’s fast break was too much for New Canaan to handle. Offensively, Newtown was running on all cylinders. Lauren Wilcox, Casey Harkins and Caitlyn Linden led the team in scoring. Lindsay Hoyt, Katie Mossbarger and Haley Ryan led the team in assists. Katie Laaksonen, Maren Brady, Kelly Merrick and Alana Murray teamed up for key rebounds.

Stamford 23, Newtown 22: Newtown lost a heartbreaker in quadruple overtime. Casey Harkins and Alana Murray led the offense. Haley Ryan and Caitlyn Linden combined for 14 steals. Lindsay Hoyt, Katie Mossbarger, Kelly Merrick and Katie Laaksonen played well defensively. Maren Brady and Lauren Wilcox crashed the boards and pulled down 16 rebounds.

Grade 6 In House

Screaming Eagles 30, Wolves 19: Connor “The Beast” LeMay, Chris Hartley, and “Smilin” Kyle Mangold combined for 12 points and 20 rebounds in the Screaming Eagles’ win. Jaret DeVellis led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points and 6 different Eagle players scored. Will “Rooster” Dalton, and Shane Quimby led the tough Eagle defense with several steals, blocked shots, and numerous strong plays. Zachary Weiland and Eric Cascone each scored 4 points to pace the Wolves offense. Kaj Djonne played well on both offense and defense, while Jack Corbett anchored the defense and also collect six rebounds.

Dunkeys 31, Semi Pros 15: Wiley Zahansky led the Dunkeys with 12 points. Stephen Grasso added 7. Peter Manfredonia, Chris Horkachuck, and Carl Whippie led a strong rebounding effort by the Dunkeys. Tommy Shaker and Harry DuPuy led the Semi Pros’ offensive attack combining for 11 points. Jared Tananbaum led the defense with 3 steals. Joe Stromski and Eric Gibbons both pitched in with solid defense and strong rebounding performances.

Heat 23, Dragons 21: Luke Rustici scored 8 critical points to lead the comeback and the Heat hung on to defeat the Dragons 23-21. Will Swain had 5 assists, while Erik Street pulled down 7 rebounds. Harry Duffy’s tough “D” rounded out the Heat’s attack. Bobby Lydon and David Matthews combined for 11 points for the Dragons. Deegan Beauchemin and Conrad Sawyer kept up the offensive pressure with key baskets while Tommy Rahr was the leader in the battle under the boards for the Dragons.

Junkyard Dogs 34, Gators 23: “Broadway” Joe Santella and Charlie Huegi spearheaded the offensive attack for the Dogs by pouring in 12 points each. Forest Speed scored 4 points and, along with Graham Hubbert, contributed stifling defense on their bigger opponents. Nick Lotrecchiano dropped in 6 points and used his quickness to grab 6 steals. Bobby Archiere had 9 points, and Aidan Petershack hauled down 7 boards. Steven Tramontozzi and Scott Gregson led the defense with 3 steals apiece.

Celtics 39, Gators 27: Leading the way for the Celtics was Jon “The Shooter” Sherman who dropped in 12 points, 2 assists and had numerous steals. Also contributing strongly to the C’s defense were Liam “Diesel” Decker and John “The Wall” Narducci. With relentless effort, the Diesel helped to slow down the Gators and grabbed multiple rebounds in the process. In addition, when not setting bricklike picks to set The Shooter and other teammates free, The Wall was a key defender when double-teaming the Gators’ back court. The Gators were led in scoring by Bryce “Big Man” Decker with 10. Jason Ferrari and Mitchell Godin both contributed 8 points. Dan “The Man” Hamula dished out 4 assists. Bryce and Robbie McCabe combined for 10 rebounds. Brian “The Pitbull” Raab had 4 steals. Adam Israel was excellent on offense. Alec Clark, Gustavo Porto and Matt Hess played well.

Grade 7 Travel

Newtown Bounce 34, Fairfield Sky 32: Early low post dominance by Danille Shine combined with determined play down the stretch by Kristie VosWinkel lifted Newtown in an overtime contest. Shine’s 14 points led Newtown and VosWinkel added 9 points, 7 of which came in the fourth quarter and overtime. Kerry Scalon rounded out the overtime scoring to put away the physical Fairfield squad.

Monroe 29, Newtown Bounce 28: Guards Mary Joe Rossi, Emily Maher, Tess Murray, and Emily Grimes led the Bounce. Mary Joe Rossi led all scorers with 16 points.

Grade 8 Travel

Newtown Attack 24, Stamford 17: Newtown pulled ahead in the fourth quarter with Maddie Good hitting two 3-pointers. Lydia Beiter made a key steal to help seal the victory. Tressa Scott had 7 rebounds.

Newtown Attack 29, Wilton 22: Claire Miles and Bridget Power lifted the offense. Samantha Steimle and Kristy Papaj had 5 assists each and played physical defense.

Newtown Attack 52, Bridgeport-Trumbull Gardens 24: Erin Kenning tossed in 9 points and Meaghan Harkins added 6 in the victory. Kristy Papaj played strong defense against a 6-foot-plus eighth-grader and held her scoreless.

Jr Boys

Gators 36, Tar Heels 22: For the Gators, Patrick Thornberg was the high scorer with 10 points. Noah Sock had 4 assists, Stephan Conway had 5 steals and Wesley Morlock had 6 rebounds. Alec Brauchmin had 5 points and played well. For the Tar Heels, Drew Tarrintino had 10 points, Mat Rahtelli had 3 assists, Brenton Scott had 5 steals and Ben Payne had 5 rebounds.

Bricklayers 36, Nets 27: For the Bricklayers, Phil Reynolds was the high scorer with 10 points, Jonah Muniz had 5 assists and Andrew Volkers had 7 rebounds. For the Nets, Angel Santos had 10 points, Richard Greenwood led the defense and David Cartisano and Nicky Sajovic had strong games.

Runnin’ Rebels 39, Grizzlies 20: For the Runnin’ Rebels, Michael Senf and Riley Cross were the high scorers with 8 points each and Drew Sullivan had a strong defensive game. For the Grizzlies, JP Kitzmiller had 9 points, Garrison Buzzanca had 7 points and Collin Moller was strong on defense.

Wildcats 66, Huskies 49: For the Wildcats, Wyatt Depuy was the high scorer with 28 points, Virgil Proccacini had 16 points, and Austin Raftery and Patrick Rowley led the defense. For the Huskies, Dean Demers led the offense with 20 points, Grants Ricketts had 7 assists and 12 points, the defense was led by Nadimul Hague and Jeff Peterson.

Nighthawks 44, Bullets 40: For the Nighthawks, the offense was led by Mike Scharfenberg with 29 points and 10 rebounds and was supported by Matt Wood with 6 points and Mike Burton 4 points, the defensive star was Brock Chimileski, Adam Harrison and Nick Norberg played well. For the Bullets, Chris Deveney had 14 points Chris Carroll had 6 assists the defense was led by Austin Babyack and Jimmy Leidlein.

Heat 61, Warriors 44: For the Heat, Justin DeVellis led the offense with 31 points and Ruhit Asham had 14 points, the defense was led by Ryan Rosenberger, Nick Madden, and John Meyers, Spencer Brindley had 4 assists. For the Warriors, Eric Fiore had 24 points, Chris Otero had 10 points and PJ Hickey played well on offense. The defense was led by Ryan and Eric Pasani.

The Team 45, Celtics 44: For The Team, Joe Daviss led the offense with 15 points and the defense was led by Nick Marcinek. For the Celtics, Tom Floros had 11 points and Christian Barrett had 9 points, the defense was led by Danny Cummings and Cameron McCleary.

Knicks 48, Trash Talkers 36: For the Knicks, Patrick Riccardi had 25 points and Matt White had 10 Points to lead the offense, Ivan Hutchinson, Grant Larnard, and Shay DeMarche led the defense. For the Trash Talkers, Matt Shannon, and Jamie MacDonald had 8 points each, Max Hayes and Patrick Afryie led the defense.

Bantam Boys

Gladiators 30, Wizards 20: Austin Engler scored 16 points and Bryan Morrissey, Tyler Lacroche, and Jack Palermo all played well in the win. Thomas Cotton had eight points to lead the Wizards who received strong play from Steve Moccio, Joey Conrod, and RH Clark.

Flaming Monkeys 37, Orange Fire 26: Graham Dowd led the winners with 19 points. Thomas Addessi had 4 assists, Greg Trimarchi had 5 steals and Jason Hebner pulled down 9 rebounds in the win. The Orange Fire was led by Colby Olson’s 8 points, 2 assists by Matt Kretz, 3 steals by Matt Guinee and 6 rebounds from Jack Lavelle.

Green Rockets 28, Hounds 27: Will Lemay lifted the Rockets with 6 points. Connery Mayer had 6 assists, Alex Dunleavy came up with 2 steals and Mike Libertante grabbed 4 rebounds in the win. Joe Accousti had 10 points for the Hounds. Will Corbett, Noah Laferriere and Dylan Kretz all played well in the defeat.

Red Devils 24, Huskies 23: Austin Kasbarian had 10 points, Will Huegi assisted 5 baskets, Gino Pagliaro had 4 steals and Teddy Silverman had 4 rebounds in the win. The Huskies were led by 7 points from Bryce Griffin, 3 assists from Brian Kerins, 5 rebounds by Timmy Cervera and 5 steals by Evan Kohlsaat.
