  • SMART Camp Wraps Up Summer 2015 Sessions

    Campers who took part in the Theater & Performance Workshop at SMART Camp perform for fellow campers and family members, Friday, July 31, culminating their two weeks of fun.

  • Computer Programming With Scratch Camp

    Under the guidance of instructor Tim McGuire, students in Newtown Continuing Education’s Introduction to Computer Programming Using Scratch 2.0 worked on Wednesday, July 22, to create computer games.

    Mr McGuire said the camp, which has been offered before, drew 15 students this year, and a number of them were returning campers from previous years or from other computer camps offered this summer. The camp ran from July 20 to July 24.

  • Newtown Continuing Education’s WeDo Robotics Camp

    Newtown Continuing Education's WeDo Robotics camp had campers working on Wednesday, July 15, under the watchful eye of Reed Intermediate School computer teacher Tim McGuire.

    The WeDo Robotics camp, according to the description from Newtown Continuing Education, provides, “participants the opportunity to design simple robots with working motors and sensors. Students will explore core STEM skills (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) as they build and program the robots using the Scratch application.”

  • Creating Worlds And Games At Minecraft Camp

    Young gaming enthusiasts clicked away on Wednesday, July 8, at Minecraft Gameplay camp, offered through Newtown Continuing Education, in the Reed Intermediate School’s computer lab.

    This past week Tim McGuire, the computer technology teacher at Reed, led 15 students grades five and above through the world of Minecraft, a popular computer and video game.

  • Continuing Education SMART Camp Program Begins

    Newtown Continuing Education has launched the 24th year of its SMART camp.

    The Summer, Music, and Art camp is held at Head O’Meadow School and offers a variety of different classes for children from kindergarten to sixth grade.

    “A program with that kind of longevity tells you that the children are having a good time, and the parents are happy. So here we are, 24 years later,” said Stephanie Schwartz, the program's site supervisor.

  • Design It, Build It, Launch It Camp Begins First Session

    With campers working to build catapults on Tuesday, July 7, Newtown Continuing Education Design It, Build It, Launch It camp instructor Rick Lowry said the first two-week session was starting off well.

    The first session began on Monday, July 6, and runs through July 17. A second two-week sessions is slated from July 20 to 31, and enrollment is still open for the second session.

    "It's fun, really fun," said camper Jett Lyons, as he worked on his catapult on Tuesday.

  • Continuing Education Summer Camps Available For A Number Of Interests

    Parents looking for something for their children to do — whether by introducing a new topic or continuing an already established interest shown by sons and daughters — have a number of options available during summer break. Newtown Continuing Education has again scheduled summer camps with a number of topics available.

    This summer will mark the 24th year Continuing Education will be running its SMART (Summer Music and ARTs) summer camp.
