Protect Our Pollinators, a local nonprofit organization devoted to the conservation of pollinators and their habitats, will host a winter sowing workshop on Friday, January 16, from 2-4 pm, at Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street.

The workshop is free for members of the senior center, or $5 for nonmembers.

Winter sowing is an easy and economical way to grow native plants for your property and porch planters. Using recycled one-gallon jugs, soil, and the outdoor weather will promote the growth of native plant seedlings.

Members of Protect Our Pollinators will walk their guests through the step-by-step process of preparing a jug to plant native seeds. Those planning to attend must provide their own one-gallon jug. POP will provide native plant seeds that will include, but are not limited to, New York ironweed, white wood aster, purple coneflower, Joe Pye weed, and mountain mint.

POP members will also offer advice on the care of these plants throughout their life cycles.

To register, call Newtown Senior Center at 203-270-4310. The workshop fee for nonmembers can be paid the afternoon of the event.
