‘Brad Stanton: Light And Lines, Figuratively’ To Open January 10 At Still River Editions
DANBURY — Photographer Brad Stanton will have his work featured in the upcoming solo exhibition “Light and Lines, Figuratively,” opening January 10 at The Gallery at Still River Editions.
The exhibition will remain on view through April 3. An opening reception is planned on Saturday, January 10, from 2 to 4 pm, with a snow date of January 17.
The exhibition and opening reception are both free and open to the public.
Stanton, who grew up in Newtown and is now based in Danbury, has spent many years as a commercial photographer serving a wide range of corporate clients, creatives, makers, designers, and artists. Mastering his craft in that realm gave him a deep knowledge of the techniques that now enable him to create a personal body of work that “reveal[s] beauty in the familiar — transforming ordinary scenes into images that invite reflection and connection,” Stanton says in part within the artist’s statement accompanying this first solo exhibition.
The photographs in “Light and Lines, Figuratively” are striking figure studies, highlighted by the warm tones of the prints. Each figure is cloaked in fabric, and the end result is mysterious, focusing on the forms the bodies create, their features transformed into abstract shapes.
There is a long history of veiled nudes in art, dating back to the sculptures of ancient Greece and Rome. Rococo master sculptors like Antonio Corradini influenced artists into the Neoclassical and Romantic movements. Photographers like Erwin Blumenfeld and Vic Huber worked with fabric-draped models to heighten the complexity of his depictions of the female form.
Stanton’s nudes are not veiled for modesty, but to create tension between the stretch of the fabric and the posed bodies underneath. The meanings and feelings evoked by these partially hidden bodies are up to interpretation in the eyes and minds of the beholders.
Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am-5 pm. The gallery is located at 128 East Liberty Street in Danbury. Call 203-791-1474 or visit stillrivereditions.com/brad-stanton-light-and-lines for additional information.
