Boys’ Basketball Defeats A Pair of Nonconference Foes
Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team closed out 2025 and opened the new year with victories over nonconference foes. The Nighthawks traveled to Winstead to take on Northwestern Regional High on December 30 and came away with a 51-47 victory, then took to their home court and earned a 65-46 win over Torrington on January 3.
In the win over Northwestern, Aidan Walker scored 17 points, James Glynn had 11, and Luke Stewart and Emmet Regan scored nine apiece. Walker and Glynn each hit a trio of 3-pointers. Marcus Gerace had four assists, Walker had a pair of steals, and Stewart a steal and a block.
The Nighthawks led 15-4 after one quarter of play, but fell behind 25-20 at the half before coming back in the third. NHS outscored Northwestern 17-10 in the third to carry a 37-30 lead to the fourth.
Against Torrington, Stewart led the way with 19 points; Glynn had 14, hitting a pair of 3-pointers along the way; Gerace had ten; Regan nine; and Teddy Moxham six. Quinn Kull added three points, and Quinn Velez and Joe Rossomando each tacked on two. Glynn and Stewart each had two steals, Velez and Moxham both had seven rebounds, Gerace had six rebounds, and Stewart and Spencer Maddox both grabbed five rebounds. Glynn had six assists and Stewart five assists.
Newtown led 11-8 after one quarter of play and held a 29-26 halftime advantage after a high-scoring second quarter. The Nighthawks went up 45-37 after three and put the game away by outscoring Torrington 20-9 in the fourth.
The Hawks were home for their first South-West Conference matchup of the season as Stratford visited on January 5. Stratford had beaten NHS in a nonconference battle in December and won again, 71-57, in the rematch. The Hawks led the Red Devils 32-27 at the half, but Stratford pulled ahead 53-43 after three quarters. Stewart hit a couple of 3-pointers and led Newtown with 16 points. Glynn had nine, Velez and Gerace each had eight, and Regan added seven.
Newtown, 3-4 overall, visits Joel Barlow of Redding Friday, January 9 at 7 pm and returns home Monday, January 12 to take on Pomperaug of Southbury, also at 7.
