Grapplers Rack Up 39 Individual Wins In 5th Annual Nighthawk Invitational Duals

Newtown High School’s wrestling team hosted its 5th Annual Nighthawk Invitational Duals on January 3. The team went 4-1, beating Fairfield Prep (53-28), Wilton (47-33), Simsbury (48-35) and Masuk of Monroe (53-30). The team’s only loss came to Notre-Dame-West Haven (45-33). The Nighthawks won 39 individual matches, including 29 by pinfall.

Top performers included:

Jake Maddox — five wins with four pins

Antonio Arguello — five wins with four pins

Owen Blair — four wins with four pins

Bohdan Petryshyn — four wins with three pins

Noah Blair — four wins with two pins

Micah Houston and the Blair brothers all bumped up a weight class to contribute to the team’s victories.

Jake Fattibene, Troy Da Silva, Bohdan Petryshyn, and Rion Lena all earned their varsity letters by earning a minimum of 18 teams points.

Following a match with South-West Conference foe Brookfield on Wednesday, the varsity team is splitting up into two squads for the weekend. One group is traveling to the Eastern States Classic at Impact Athletic Center in Clifton Park, N.Y. This is a highly competitive tournament drawing over 180 schools. The second group will be competing at the Fairfield Warde Invitational against some of the toughest teams in the state.
