Wrestlers Win Greater Hartford Open
Newtown High School’s wrestling team won the Greater Hartford Open on January 10.
Newtown scored 296.5 points to defeat ten opponents. Second-place New Milford had 184.5, and third-place Greenwich scored 142.5. The Nighthawks had 11 finalists, 10 champions, and 13 of 14 weight division grapplers among the top three. Newtown highlights from the finals of the Hartford tourney are as follows:
106: Tom Leuci pinned Foran of Milford’s Gino Esposito in 3:48.
113: Luca Crudo earned a 1-0 decision over New Milford’s Mel Ortiz.
126: Ed Lovely pinned New Milford’s Tyler Schultz in 1:08.
132: Matt Gonzalez pinned Newington’s Rafael Anderson in 0:41.
138: James Leuci earned a 17-4 decision over Greenwich’s Mike Ceci.
145: Alex Stavola earned an 8-1 decision over Wethersfield’s Brendan Livingston.
152: Joe Accousti lost an 8-5 decision to Newington’s Brendan Zotti.
160: Connor LeMay earned a 2-1 decision over Granby’s Steffen Janser.
170: Anthony Falbo earned an 18-3 decision over Foran’s Noah Hubler.
182: Logan Walsh earned a 6-2 decision over Hall’s Alper Ozdemir.
195: Andy Hubina earned an 8-0 decision over New Milford’s Denzel Phillips.
