CL&P Launches Electrical

Safety World Site for Youngsters

BERLIN — The Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P), in partnership with Culver Company, has launched the interactive Electrical Safety World on its website to teach elementary and middle school youngsters how to stay safe around electricity and avoid electrical accidents.

Thousands of people, many of them children, are injured or killed annually in electrical accidents in the United States. “The more youngsters know about electricity the safer they will be. Electrical Safety World is a great way to help parents, teachers, and youth leaders educate youngsters about electricity and its perils,” said Theresa Hopkins-Staten, director, community relations and programs, CL&P.

Electrical Safety World is available by going to www.cl-p.com/electricsafetyworld/index.html. The colorful site includes a home safety audit, interactive games such as “Find the Hidden Dangers” and an activity like “Tell Your Story,” which profiles a real-life shock victim and asks students to interview someone who has had an electric shock.

The site also has a complete glossary of electrical terms and links to related sites on the science of electricity, electrical inventions, and electrical safety. “Children can learn the basics of electricity and how it works and travels; the potential dangers associated with electricity, including tree and power line safety; and what to do in an electrical emergency,” explains Hopkins-Staten.

The Electrical Safety World site complements materials in CL&P’s Electrical School Safety program. The website and school safety program are extremely helpful for students, teachers, and community organizations looking for electrical safety information. A complete teacher’s guide, including activities and lesson plans, is available on the site to assist teachers in bringing the concepts from the web into the classroom.

The Connecticut Light and Power Company has been part of everyday life in Connecticut for more than 100 years, providing safe and reliable electric service to homes, neighborhoods, and businesses. With more than 1.1 million customers in 149 cities and towns, CL&P is an active member in the communities it serves, offering programs in energy conservation, economic development and environmental education. CL&P is part of the Northeast Utilities System (NYSE: NU). For more information, visit www.cl-p.com.
