Sugar Street Crash

Police report that motorist Angela Evertez, 40, of 47 Poverty Hollow Road was driving a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV westward on Sugar Street, near its intersection with Head O’ Meadow Road, about 2:11 pm on January 3, as motorist Maura Curry, 57, of Redding was driving a 2012 Jeep Wrangler SUV eastward there.

While negotiating a curve in the road, the Grand Cherokee went out of control due to slippery pavement conditions and entered the opposite lane, resulting in the two vehicles colliding, police said.

A passenger in the Grand Cherokee reported minor injuries and was transported by local ambulance volunteers to Danbury Hospital, police said.

Police said they issued Evertez an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Sandy Hook Accident

At about 6 pm on January 7, motorist Cathy Robinson, 53, of Monroe was driving a 2006 Toyota 4-Runner SUV northward on Great Ring Road, near Sand Hill Road, and while negotiating a right curve in the road, went straight and struck some guardrailing and a utility pole, police report.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated Robinson at the scene, police said. Police took no enforcement because a mechanical failure had caused the accident.

Mazda Vs Jeep

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Hanover Road and Hall Lane about 2:40 pm on January 3 while the roadways were snow covered, police said.

Motorist Mark Ankers, 43, of 2 Hall Lane was driving a 2013 Mazda CX-9 SUV eastward on Hall Lane, as motorist Kim Davies, 66, of Brookfield was driving a 2012 Jeep Liberty SUV southward on Hanover Road, police said.

Due to snowy conditions, the Mazda went out of control and entered the two roads’ intersection without stopping, resulting in a collision, police said.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Ankers for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.

SUV Vs SUV

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Castle Hill Road, near Old Castle Hill Road, about 11:55 am on January 4.

Motorist Todd Bidwell, 50, of Bethel was driving a 2008 Honda CRV SUV eastward, as motorist Susana Tripodi, 75, of Stamford was driving a 2006 Hyundai Tucson SUV westward, police said.

The Honda was negotiating a curve in the road when it went out of control on the slushy, icy pavement, entered the opposite lane and then collided with the Hyundai, police said.

There were no injuries. Bidwell received a written warning for failure to keep to the right on a curve, police said.

Wasserman Way

At about 6:11 pm on January 2, motorist Richard Wilford, 38, of 7 Watch Hill Road was driving a 2008 Honda Accord sedan westward near 21 Wasserman Way, when a deer ran out onto the road, resulting in a collision, according to police. Wilford was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Main Street Collision

Motorist James O. Gaston, Jr, 24, of 18 Main Street was driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler SUV northward on Main Street about 6:47 pm on January 5, when he signaled to make a left turn into the Edmond Town Hall driveway and then stopped to wait for oncoming southbound traffic, police said.

Northbound motorist Rachel Bassett, 51, of 88 Walnut Tree Hill Road, who was driving a 2008 Infiniti EX-35 SUV, then struck the rear end of the Jeep, police said.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Bassett for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Three Charges

Police report an incident at a rental property on Forest Drive in the Riverside section of Sandy Hook on the morning of January 7.

Police said that Brian Hunter, 54, of 22 Marlin Road, who is the landlord for that property, illegally entered an apartment there and involved in a physical altercation with a tenant, spraying the tenant’s face with a Mace-brand gel-type pepper-based facial irritant.

Hunter then allegedly took the tenant’s cellphone and left the scene, police said.

Police later arrested Hunter on charges of third-degree assault, sixth-degree larceny, and criminal trespassing. Police released Hunter on $5,000 bail for a January 21 court appearance.

South Main Street

At about 11:30 am on January 8, motorist Raymond Nobes, 49, of 2 Covered Bridge Road was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck southward near 115 South Main Street and then stopped for traffic conditions, after which he was struck from behind by motorist Patrick McDougal, 43, of Roxbury, who was driving a 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck, police said.

There were no injuries. McDougal received a written warning for following too closely, police said.

School Bus Accident

School bus driver John B. Cash, Jr, 42, of Fairfield was driving a full-sized school bus without passengers on Morris Road at about 3:11 pm on January 6, when while backing up, the bus struck an embankment, police said. The bus is owned by All-Star Transportation of Waterbury.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Cash for a vehicle-backing violation.

Evading Responsibility

At about 7:30 am on January 12, the driver of a white SUV struck and damaged fence on a property on Sugar Street, near its intersection with Key Rock Road, and then drove away, police said. The SUV would have impact damage to its driver’s side. Police ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Currituck Road

A two-vehicle accident occurred during snowy road conditions on Currituck Road near the Housatonic Railroad overpass about 3:18 pm on January 3.

Motorist John Tamborino, 58, of 8 Hall Lane, who was driving a 2011 Ford Expedition SUV southward, stopped for traffic conditions, after which the Ford was struck from behind by motorist Brandon Adams, 37, of 127 Currituck Road, who was driving a 2011 Subaru Legacy sedan, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Adams for following too closely.

Burglary/Larceny

Police report that after returning to a house on Blue Spruce Drive on January 10, after having been away for an extended period, the resident discovered that jewelry and silverware were missing.

The stolen items are worth several thousand dollars, police said. Police are investigating the incident.

Possession Of A Weapon

Police report that at about 11 pm on January 11, while on patrol, they spotted suspicious vehicles in the parking lot at Sand Hill Plaza, a shopping center at 228 South Main Street, so they investigated.

Police said they found a pistol-style BB-gun in one of the vehicles after involving a K9 in the search.

Police charged Lizabeth Rivas, 19, of Danbury with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle. Rivas was released on $500 bail and was issued a January 27 court date to respond to the charges.

SUV Collision

Police said motorist Mona Rasekh, 76, of 3 Newfield Lane was driving a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV southward near the intersection of Currituck Road and Parmalee Hill Road at about 5:15 pm on January 10, when a deer entered the roadway, resulting in collision. Rasekh was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Taunton Lake Road

A two-vehicle accident occurred during inclement weather conditions about 1:39 pm on January 12 on Taunton Lake Road, near its intersection with Castle Hill Road.

Police report that motorist Russell Strasburger, 72, of 37 Taunton Lake Road was driving a 2014 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck westward on Taunton Lake Road, as motorist Andrew Sullivan, 19, of 10 Bobcat Lane was driving a 2005 Toyota Prius eastward there.

The Prius then struck some curbing, went out of control, and crossed into the opposite lane, colliding with the Toyota, police said.

Sullivan and Toyota passenger Patricia Strasburger, 63, of 37 Taunton Lake Road were injured in the accident, police said. Sullivan received an infraction for making a restricted turn, police said.

SUV Vs Sedan

At about 3 pm on January 3, motorist Robert Preston, 50, of 19-A Georges Hill Road was driving a 2002 GMC Denali SUV southward on a snow-covered Currituck Road, as motorist Michael Olendorf, 26, of Bethel was driving a 1997 Nissan Altima sedan northward on Main Street, police said.

The GMC went out of control on the snowy pavement and slid into the intersection of the two roads, resulting in collision, police said.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Police report that motorist Adam Kwest, 36, of Brookfield was driving a 2012 Ford Fusion sedan northward on Currituck Road about 3:47 am on January 13, when the auto went into a skid on the slippery pavement at Currituck Road’s intersection with Butterfield Road and then struck a stone wall. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Kwest an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions and for making a restricted turn. Hawleyville volunteer firefighters responded to the accident, as did an ambulance crew.
This 2005 Saturn Relay SUV received heavy damage in an accident on eastbound Interstate 84, just east of the Exit 9 off-ramp, at about 2:48 pm on January 13. State police said motorist Dorene Via, 42, of 13 Johnny Appleseed Drive, who was driving the Saturn, lost control of the vehicle and then struck the median guardrail, after which the Saturn struck the side of a cargo trailer being hauled by Freightliner tractor-trailer truck driver Joshua Grimes, 32, of Woonsocket, RI. Via was evaluated for possible injuries by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, but refused to be transported by ambulance, state police said. Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company firefighters responded to the accident.
