Newtown Woman Charged In Mail Theft
EASTON ââ Easton police have charged a Newtown woman with sixth degree larceny in connection with her alleged theft of mail.
Easton police said they charged Caroline Eckert, 28, of 17 Old Hawleyville Road, at 11:50 am on January 8 on a warrant, after spotting her driving her 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit on Sport Hill Road.
Easton police said Eckert had stolen mail, including a check, from a residential mailbox in Easton, after which she cashed the stolen check at a Newtown bank.
Eckert is suspected of other mail thefts in Easton, dating back to October 2003, Easton police said.
The US Postal Inspectors Office of New Haven assisted Easton police in their investigation.
Easton police said that on checking the contents of Ms Eckertâs Volkswagen, they found mail that they believe was stolen from approximately 30 Easton residents, 12 Newtown residents, as well as residents of Redding and Bridgeport.
After processing her arrest, Easton police released Eckert on a promise to appear January 22 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
Easton police said the postal inspectors will aid them in notifying the residents whose mail was found in the Volkswagen.
Newtown police said they are investigating, based on information supplied to them by Easton police.
Easton police said they are continuing to investigate and expect to press additional charges.
