USDA Recalls Imported Pinecones

STORRS — The US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has announced a national recall on scented pinecones imported from India.

These cones were found to contain live larvae of a wood-boring longhorn beetle (Chlorophorus strobilicola) that is not known to previously exist in the United States. Officials do not know what the impact would be if this destructive insect were to attack the native pine species.

The infested cones have been found in Frank’s Nursery, Kmart, Target, Wal-Mart, JoAnn Fabrics, Lowe’s, Dollar Tree, and Safeway stores nationwide. To find out what to look for and what to do about this potential invader contact the University of Connecticut Home and Garden Education Center toll-free at 877- 486-6271 or visit the website, www.canr.uconn.edu/garden.
