Slid On Ice, Hit Guardrail
Newtown Police report Esther Ribeiro, 19, of Bethel, operating a 2018 Toyota Rav4, was traveling eastbound on Toddy Hill Road at 9:43 am January 2. While negotiating a left-hand curve in the road, the vehicle slipped on the icy roadway and struck a guardrail.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
Ribeiro was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive in the proper lane.
Pole Hits Building
Newtown Police report Willard Jacobs, 58, of Naugatuck, operating a Ford F550, was plowing snow in the parking lot of Botsford Fire Department at 10:03 am January 2. A large pole mounted on the rear of the vehicle struck the gutters at the front of the building.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
Struck Mailbox
Newtown Police report Arlene Garcia, 46, of Danbury, operating a 2022 Tesla Model Y, was traveling northbound on Berkshire Road at 12:17 pm January 2. The vehicle ran off the roadway right and struck a mailbox.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
Garcia was issued an infraction for failure to maintain a lane.
Hit Flagpole
Newtown Police report Barbara Dempsey, 74, of Wilton, operating a 2019 Honda Fit, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road at 12:25 pm January 2. Dempsey came to a stop for the stop sign at the intersection with Main Street and attempted a left turn onto Main, and struck the flagpole.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.
Dempsey was issued a written warning for making a restricted turn.
Struck Guardrail, Flipped Car
Newtown Police report Lorie Ibarra, 54, of Shelton, operating a 2020 Nissan Rogue, was traveling north on Berkshire Road at 11:07 pm January 2. Ibarra lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway on the northbound shoulder, striking a guardrail. The vehicle rode the guardrail for several feet and then the front of the vehicle dug into the ground, causing the vehicle to do a complete roll, hitting a small tree and then coming to rest on a stump.
Ibarra was transported to Danbury Hospital for possible injuries. The vehicle was towed.
Ibarra was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
Slid Into Stopped Car
Newtown Police report Evelyn Morocho, 19, of Newtown, operating a 2015 Nissan Leaf, was traveling westbound on Mt Pleasant Road at 7:44 am January 5. Hailey Ditscher, 24, of Danbury, operating a 2017 Audi Q7, was stopped in traffic on Hawleyville Road in the southbound left turn only lane. As Morocho’s vehicle turned onto Hawleyville Road, it slid on frost on the roadway, crossing the southbound lane and striking Ditscher’s vehicle.
A passenger was treated at the scene for a possible injury. Both vehicles were towed.
Morocho was issued a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
Following Too Close
Newtown Police report Cathryn Amos, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Nissan Leaf, was traveling on Hawleyville Road at 2:35 pm January 5. She was behind a 2015 Toyota Rav4 operated by Cedar Veleas, 18, of Newtown, which in turn was behind a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 operated by Robert Morey, 64, of Newtown, that was stopped behind a vehicle waiting to turn onto Covered Bridge Road. Amos rear-ended Veleas’ vehicle, which in turn was pushed forward into Morey’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Amos’ and Veleas’ vehicles were both towed.
Amos was issued a verbal warning for following too close.
Hit Deer
Newtown Police report John Napolitano, 48, of Monroe, operating a 2019 Audi Q7, was traveling westbound on Jeremiah Road at 5:41 pm January 6. A deer entered the roadway and was struck by Napolitano’s vehicle.
Napolitano was not injured. The vehicle was not towed.
No enforcement action was taken.
Deer Hit By Car
Newtown Police report Gregory Ammon, 39, of North Haven, operating a 2022 Hyundai Tucson, was traveling westbound on Dodgingtown Road at 6:55 pm January 6. A deer entered the roadway and was struck by Ammon’s vehicle.
Ammon was not injured. The vehicle was towed.
No enforcement action was taken.
Improper Turn
Newtown Police report Keshaun Robinson, 29, of Bridgeport, operating a 2020 Ford Transit, was traveling on Rooster Ridge Road at 11:55 am January 8. Marcellus Pin, 70, of Newtown, operating a 2014 Honda Accord, was traveling southbound on Dodgingtown Road near the intersection with Rooster Ridge Road. Robinson turned left onto Dodgingtown Road and struck Pin’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Robinson was issued an infraction for making an improper turn.
Collision In Intersection
Newtown Police report Cathleen McCormick, 47, of Newtown, operating a 2023 Tesla Model X, was traveling westbound on Gregory Lane at 5:20 pm January 10. Kayla Crisalli, 29, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2025 Toyota Corolla, was traveling westbound on Hi Barlow Road. McCormick began a merge onto Hi Barlow Road and struck Crisalli’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
McCormick was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way in an intersection.
Failure To Obey Stop Sign
Newtown Police report Louie Ribeiro, 65, of Stratford, was traveling on Saw Mill Road at 9:37 am January 11. Francis Tagliaferro, 82, of Newtown, operating a 2023 Kia Sorento, was traveling northbound on Mt Pleasant Road. Ribeiro said he came to a stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and pulled onto Mt Pleasant Road, where he struck Tagliaferro’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Ribeiro was issued a verbal warning for failure to obey a stop sign.
Avoided Branch, Hit Tree
Newtown Police report Sophie Augustine, 16, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2015 Subaru Outback, was traveling westbound on Jeremiah Road at 9:44 am January 11. A large branch fell in the roadway ahead of Augustine’s vehicle, and she swerved to avoid the branch before going off the shoulder right and down a short embankment before striking a tree.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
No enforcement action was taken.
Hit Parked Car
Newtown Police report Iyanna Latimer, 27, of Danbury, operating a 2016 Mazda CX-5, was exiting Dayton Street to travel westbound on Church Hill Road at 3:49 pm January 11. The passenger side of the vehicle crossed the fog line and struck a parked, unoccupied 2015 Subaru Outback owned by Rhonda Hayden of New Fairfield.
No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed.
Latimer was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane.
Struck Deer
Newtown Police report Patrick Cooney, 58, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2017 Acura RDX, was traveling southbound on Great Ring Road at 4:24 pm January 11. A deer entered the roadway and was struck by Cooney’s vehicle.
Cooney was not injured. His vehicle was not towed.
No enforcement action was taken.
Slid Into Intersection
Newtown Police report Bryan Castaneda, 21, of Monroe, operating a 2017 Hyundai Elantra, was approaching the stop sign at the intersection of Swamp Road and Botsford Hill Road at 8:16 pm January 11. Alyssa Jobin, 19, of Danbury, operating a 2018 Honda HR-V, was traveling eastbound on Botsford Hill Road. Castaneda’s vehicle slid on ice and struck Jobin’s vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.
Castaneda was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
Rear Ended On Berkshire Road
Newtown Police report Stephen Mammola, 17, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2013 Honda Civic, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road at 7:39 am January 12. He was traveling behind a 2024 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter operated by Jonathan Peden, 36, of Norwalk. Peden stopped in traffic to turn left onto Pole Bridge Road and Mammola rear-ended his vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Mammola’s vehicle was towed.
Mammola received a verbal warning for following too close.
