Garner Prison Warning System Test Scheduled

Garner Correctional Institution, the state’s high-security prison at 50 Nunnawauk Road, plans to test its prison warning system starting at 9:30 am Monday, January 23, according to police.

The prison warning system, which has been in the planning stages since last spring, will use automated telephone calls to inform interested persons when there is an emergency at the prison.

On January 23, the warning system will issue a “test message” telephone call to people on its calling list to ensure that the warning system is working properly.

The notification system uses a prerecorded message to inform people of prison emergencies such as prison fires, prisoner riots, prisoner escapes, and the evacuation of prisoners from Garner for problems such as natural gas leaks. Such automated warning systems are in use at other state prisons.

Garner is the state’s prime prison for inmates with serious mental health disorders, with six of its seven cellblocks reserved for mental health inmates.

To apply to be on the calling list, residents may call the Newtown police station at 426-5841 and request that an application form be mailed to them. Also, residents may request an application by mail from police at Newtown Police Department, 3 Main Street, Newtown CT 06470.

Application information is available on the police department’s website at www.newtown-ct.gov/Public_Documents/NewtownCT_Police/CALL_SYSTEM.pdf
