The Newtown High School Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships , typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.
The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises parents and students to check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbb.org or 703-276-0100.
Best Buy Scholarship Program â The 2012 Best Buy Scholarship Program will award one-time $1,000 scholarships to students based on their outstanding commitment to community service, work experience, and academic achievements. High school students in grades nine through 12 who plan to attend postsecondary education are eligible to apply. Registration and application must be completed online, www.at15.com. The application deadline is February 15. Finalists will be notified in early March and will need to submit additional information.
National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) Scholar â The NIAAA Scholarship recognizes the importance of high school athletics and distinguishes students for scholastic, leadership, and sportsmanship attributes. Applicants must have participated in two sports for at least two years and have earned at least one varsity letter. The application is available in Naviance. All competed applications must be submitted by January 31; use the criteria check list to verify all required materials and signatures. The principal or athletic director must sign the application before submission.
Glenn Moon Scholarships â The Association of Retired Teachers of Connecticut will award one $2,000 renewable four-year scholarship and two one-time $1,500 grants to high school seniors. All graduating seniors of Connecticut high schools, public or private, are eligible, provided they are committed to pursuing teaching careers. As of 2012, all application forms must be accessed and printed from the website www.artct.org. The application and all materials must be submitted in one package and returned in the order specified on the first page of the application form postmarked by March 31.
Weller â The Vincent Voccia Vocational Award â The Weller Foundation supports local students planning a career in the skilled trades. High school seniors who are full-time students from Newtown, Joel Barlow, Masuk, Shelton, or Trumbull high schools may be considered. Each participating school will be eligible for one recipient to receive a scholarship equal to the lesser of $2,500 or 50 percent cost of tuition or fees of the vocational technical program proposed. Financial need will not be a factor in determining the award recipient. Applications are available in the Newtown High School Career Center and all materials (written references optional) must be submitted to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by Monday, March 7. The award recipients and their parents will be invited to attend the Foundationâs Annual Awards Banquet at Fairfield University to be held on May 1. In order to receive the award, students must attend the Awards Banquet.
US Coast Guard Education Scholarship â A $250 educational scholarship is being offered to students interested in attending a maritime academy or pursuing a degree in a marine-related field. The application is available in the Career Center and must be submitted with supporting materials by March 31.
UConn â 100 Years of Women Scholarship Award â This award will honor a current UConn undergraduate, graduate, or high school senior planning to enroll at UConn who has demonstrated a commitment to womenâs issues through service to their community or school. Applicants must be in need of financial assistance and demonstrate high academic performance. Applicants must complete the application with a short essay, enclose two letters of recommendation, resume and an unofficial transcript. Completed application and materials must be submitted by February 24.
