'The Burning Of Danbury'
âThe Burning
Of Danburyâ
DANBURY â Robert Young, president of Danbury Historical Society, will offer a presentation on âThe Burning of Danbury During the American Revolutionâ on Monday, February 6, at The Brookfield Museum.
Sponsored by Brookfield Historical Society, the program will begin at 7:30 pm, and is free of charge.
On April 25, 1777, British General William Tryon led more than 2,000 troops up from what is now Westport to destroy the military depot in Danbury, which housed critical supplies for the Continental Army. During the raid they burned more than 20 residences and buildings, including the new Danbury Church.
Mr Young will explore the events that led up to the raid as well as its impact on residents of the region. Also during the program a display with artifacts from this period in greater Danburyâs history will be exhibited.
Originally from the Boston area, Mr Young has long been a student of American history with special interest in the War for Independence. As a reenactor, he has participated in numerous programs, including at Putnam Park and Old Sturbridge Village.
Light refreshments will be served. The museum is at 165 Whisconier Road, which is the corner of Routes 25 and 133 in Brookfield Center. Reservations are not needed but additional information is available by calling 203-740-8140.
