Girls 8th

 

Scarsdale (NY) 63, Newtown 60 – Kelly Tenney canned 14 points while Morgan Knees and Katie Condon each added 11 to lead Newtown. Knees also grabbed 10 boards while Condon made four steals. Stacy Broughton had a fine floor game with nine points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots.

Fairfield 38, Newtown 28 – Katie Condon scored eight points as Katie Schmidt scored five and had five rebounds to lead Newtown. Hannah Tenenbaum canned five points and Harriet Morgan played a strong defensive game.

Newtown 41, Redding 23 – A balanced scoring attack helped Newtown past Redding. Hannah Tenenbaum and Morgan Knees had eight points apiece while Katie Condon and Kelly Tenney each had six. On the defensive end, Katie Schmidt had a strong game with five rebounds and two steals to go along with four points. Caitlin O’Handley had nine rebounds and six blocked shots.

Ridgefield 42, Newtown 33 – The Hawks played well in the second half, but a slow start had them on the losing end in this game. Morgan Knees had eight points and eight rebounds and Harriet Morgan kicked in seven points and three steals. Katie Kirrane played well defensively for Newtown.

Newtown 35, Danbury YMCA 23 – A strong defensive effort held Danbury to just seven baskets. Katie Condon led Newtown with 12 points and was 8-for-13 from the foul line. Morgan Knees chipped in seven points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots. Katie Schmidt and Caitlin O’Handley each had 10 rebounds. Bridie Rubino gave an excellent effort defensively for the Hawks.

Danbury PAL 36, Newtown 33 – A poor shooting day from the field prevented the Hawks from pulling out a close game. Morgan Knees had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead Newtown. Kelly Tenney had seven points and Katie Schmidt chipped in six points and nine rebounds. Stacy Broughton and Caitlin O’Handley helped control the boards with nine rebounds apiece.

New Canaan 38, Newtown 35 – After being down as many as 17 points, the Hawks staged a furious comeback only to come up short at the buzzer. Katie Condon helped lead the comeback with 15 points … 12 of those down the stretch.  Morgan Knees had five points and six rebounds and Caitlin O’Handley chipped with four points, five blocked shots and eight rebounds. Stacy Broughton and Harriet Morgan had fine defensive games for the Hawks.

Stratford 68, Newtown 43 – Cold shooting in the second quarter cost the Hawks as Stratford pulled ahead for the win. Morgan Knees led the Hawks with 16 points and seven rebounds. Hannah Tenenbaum shot well and canned 10 points. Katie Condon and Katie Schmidt combined for 13 points. Caitlin O’Handley hauled down 13 rebounds and Katie Kirrane and Bridie Rubino played well defensively for Newtown.

 

Boys 8th

 

Newtown 58, Darien 42 – Newtown got off to a fast start and never trailed in the game. Greg Rodden and Jason Smith had 14 and 11 points, respectively. Greg Larnerd did a great job off the boards. Mike Maher played a fine overall game.

MLK Tournament

Second Place

 

Newtown 33, Scarsdale (NY) 27 – Nora Lynn Shimko scored 12 points and Jenna Legros chipped in with eight to lead Newtown to the win in the Martin Luther King Tournament in Chappaqua, New York last weekend. Kasey Schulz played strong defense, leading the team with six steals, as Jordyn Good led the rebounding with eight boards.

Newtown 36, Yorktown (NY) 35 – A last second shot by Nora Lynn Shimko helped Newtown unseat the defending tournament champions. Shimko canned 14 points and Jenna Legros added nine.  Kelsey Hopper and Rachele Cox played tough underneath.

New Castle 33, Newtown 31 – The girls were tired from being at the tournament all day and didn’t have the same intensity. Nora Lynn Shimko again led the scoring with 20 points and Mary Bloshuk chipped in with four.

Yorktown 47, Newtown 35 – Yorktown got its revenge in the championship game. The locals kept it close most of the game with the press and tough zone defense, but in the end Yorktown held on to win the tournament. Nora Lynn Shimko led all scorers with 20 points while Rachele Cox chipped in another four. Adelle Cerretta and Kelsey Hopper played strong defense and battled away on the boards against a much bigger team. Elissa Robertson was tough on D.

 

Girls 6th

Newtown 27, Ridgefield 22 – The Lady Hawks played solid defense throughout the game to hold down Ridgefield and end up victorious. Sara Kelley (9 points), Jennifer Dailey (6 points) and Kaitlin Marsden (5 points) led Newtown in scoring while Ally Modzelewski, Kristen Tanner and Carolyn Fagan each chipped in a basket. Stephanie Suhoza and Nicole Elias played well and sparked the defense for Newtown.

Boys 5th

Newtown 47, Fairfield 28 – Ishan Tatake dished out six assists and scored eight points to lead Newtown to the win. Andrew Oravecz scored 10 points, while Rob Carroll, Rob Frangione and RJ Roman each added eight. Josh Engler had 11 rebounds and three steals to key the defense.

Bethel 30, Newtown 25 – RJ Roman paced the team with 10 rebounds and eight points as Newtown lost a close game to neighboring Bethel. Lewis Thompson had seven rebounds and Max Nacewicz and Sean Maher led an aggressive defense with a combined nine steals. Josh Engler played his usual all around solid game grabbing eight rebounds.

Greenwich 36, Newtown 25 – Andrew Oravecz scored eight points and Sean Maher and Robert “Pierce” Carroll added four apiece as Newtown lost to a strong Greenwich team. Danny White led the defense with tough aggressive play. Max Nacewicz and Lewis Thompson led the team in rebounding.

Newtown 30, Redding 13 – Sean Maher scored 10 points to lift Newtown to the win. Josh Engler, Rob Frangione and Danny White led the way on defense, holding Redding to 13 points. Ishan Tatake played a solid game running the offense.

Junior Boys

Lakers 46, Nitro 37 – Matt Mascolo poured in 28 points and Ryan Boucher dragged down 15 rebounds to lead the Lakers to the win. Chris Marks dished off eight assists and Robbie Blanc made five steals. For the Nitro, Zack Varga canned 16 points and Matt Brede added six. Dave Kopyscinski and Adam Cantor popped in their first buckets of the season.

Bullets 40, Kings 25 – Joe Cappiello scored nine points and Cody Cullens grabbed 10 rebounds to help lift the Bullets to the win. Kris Kling dished off six assists and Charlie Kerr made eight steals. For the Kings, Rob O’Donnell and Adam Schankman combined for 13 points while Chris Dennis (four steals) and Chris Salvatore (nine rebounds) played well.

Huskies 45, Sonics 34 – Erik Dreher popped in 20 points and Nick Urso scored nine points and dished off four assists to lead the Huskies to the win. Julian Wahlberg grabbed eight rebounds and Spencer Scott had a solid game. For the Sonics, Tyler Tarantino canned 10 points and Adam Margulies had nine blocks.

Yellow Submarines 40, Spurs 30 – Jacob Burg and Jimmy O’Brien combined for 19 points as the Yellow Submarines bested the Spurs. Steve Osmolik and Jamey Goodwick played well. For the Spurs, Kurtis Liska canned nine points and Jason Kostecki and Zack Gordon had solid performances.

Wildcats 51, Knicks 31 – Jake Devellis poured in 23 points to lead the Wildcats to the win. Ryan Golankiewicz and David Hutchison combined for 15 points while Marty Basso had six rebounds. For the Knicks, Alex Magoulas canned 19 points as John Aminti and Matty Yakush had good games.

Jazz 40, 76ers 30 – Alex Bowen scored 18 points as the Jazz upended the Sixers. Brendan Martin (seven assists), Andrew Meisel (four steals) and Dan Lawrence (seven rebounds) played well. For the Sixers, Kyle Wagner scored 13 points and Tom Jackman added eight. Ed White and Walter “Murph” Murphy had solid games.

Timberwolves 35, Rockets 27 – Dan Giorno scored 20 points while Ryan Wilson and Mike Whitley-Rodriguez combined for 17 more to lead the T-Wolves to the win. Nick Rusza played well. For the Rockets, Colin Babbage scored 11 points as Mickey Fay, Sean Ryan and Chris Murphy played well.

Intermediate Boys

Bullets 44, Lakers 23 – Kevin O’Connell scored 12 points and Conor McNamara grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Bullets. Andre Capoziello dished off six assists and Andrew Gordon made six steals. For the Lakers, Ryan Korth had four points and seven rebounds while John Walsuk had two rebounds and a steal to go along with his three points. Chris Winn and Tim Dalton had good floor games.

Nets 35, Knicks 21 – Kevin McCarthy and Dan Greenwood tossed in eight points apiece as the Nets overcame the Knicks. Bobby Mascher, Kevin Carney and Joe Fedak all played well. For the Knicks, Ben Kaye, Nicholas Badiola and Yanni Koutmos played well.

Huskies 24, Wildcats 23 – Chris Caulfield scored 10 points and Cameron Gehrman dished off five assists as the Huskies trimmed the Wildcats. Seamus Boyle made four steals. For the ‘Cats, Leo Spinelli popped in eight points as Michael Herring (four assists) and Andrew Golankiewicz (six rebounds) had solid performances.

Intermediate Girls

 

Comets 26, Suns 23 – Gina Pisacreta scored six points while Emma Kinglsey, Shannin Paproski and Hannah Deflumeri played well to lead the Comets. Taylor Benson scored six points and dragged down 10 rebounds to lead the Suns. Melissa Cucco and Lauren Powers played well.

Midget Girls

 

Wolverines versus Huskies – Rebecca Silviera, Nora Murphy, Eric Knapp and Marybeth Meier played well for the Wolverines while Hanni Brumaghin, Erin Kenning, Amy Martin and Christina Caporale powered the Huskies.

Cougars versus Celtics – Riley Wurtz, Hannah Dillon, Lia Tassinari and Paige Murphy had fine performances for the Cougars as Laurel Speed, Abbey Doski, and Kristina Engler played well for the Celtics.

Knicks versus Mustangs – Kristiana Engler, Morgan Hopper, Alexis Black and Ellyn Gordyn powered the Knicks as the Mustangs were led by Jessica Lynch, Meredith Bridges, Morgan Cutolo and Mary Kay Blawie.

Dalmations versus Hoopsters – Katie Fossum, Stephanie Zamary, Rachel Wiberg and Katie Shirley paced the Dalmations as Natalie Landfair, Courtney Escoda, and Alexandria DeWolf played well for the Hoopsters.
