Lists Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships that it is notified of. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov, 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org, 800-876-7060 or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or call 703-276-0100.

Education Connection –– A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to one high school senior who plans to pursue a career that relates to Education Connection’s mission and programs and show a long-term commitment to community service. Applications with details are available in the Career Center. They must be received by Wednesday, April. The winner will be announced by May 16.

Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards –– Regional and national awards in seven different categories are being offered to graduating high school seniors who are of Hispanic heritage, which is defined as having at least one parent of Hispanic ancestry. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent resident and have a minimum recommended GPA of 2.75. Regional winners will receive $1,000 and $2,000 educational grants. An additional grant of $5,000 will be awarded to national winners. Applicants may apply online at www.HispanicHeritageAwards.org/youth.php or with an application available in the Career Center.

The deadline is February 6.

News-Times/Stephen A. Collins Memorial Scholarship –– For a graduating Danbury area (includes Newtown) high school senior interested in pursuing a career in journalism. The award is for $1,500. An advisory board of educators, journalists, and past recipients will select the recipient based on the student’s literacy, journalistic merits, personal character, good citizenship, and journalistic potential. Recommendations and essay are required. The essay consists of a 300–500-word writing sample on a subject of the applicant’s choice. It may be a reprint of a story that has been previously published, an abbreviated version of a school term paper, or an account of a memorable day. The completed application must be received by April 1.

Bill Lauf Memorial Scholarship –– A $500 scholarship will be awarded by the Danbury Fish & Game Club to a high school senior planning on a career in journalism or the environment. The committee will make the award to the student who best exemplifies the qualities possessed by the late sportsman and journalist Bill Lauf. These qualities include, but are not limited to, sportsmanship, integrity, humor, curiosity, love of the environment, love of his fellow man, and love of writing. The application procedure includes a 250-word essay. Applications must be received by April and are available in the Career Center.

Connecticut Association of Women Police, Inc (CAWP) –– This scholarship is for high school seniors (male or female) who will be pursuing a degree in criminal justice. The FAFSA form must be completed and a high school transcript, teacher/counselor recommendation, and essay are also required. All applicants will be evaluated based on their achievements in relation to the entire pool of applicants. Applications must be postmarked by April 30 and are available in the Career Center.

Elizabeth Carlson Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund for The Performing Arts –– A scholarship for graduating seniors who plan to pursue a career in the performing arts. The application materials require a videotaped performance, a minimum one page essay, a resume including all performing arts related extracurricular activities, and three letters of reference All materials must be submitted by March 12.
