Newtown Middle School Math Club Competes In Its Third Meet

The Newtown Middle School Math Team recently enjoyed its third meet of the season; the fifth and final meet will be Tuesday, April 13.

The NMS Math Team is part of the Fairfield County Junior Math League, which competes within two sectors, Division A and B. NMS is part of Division B, which includes Helen Keller Middle School in Easton, Broadview and Rogers Park middle schools in Danbury, and Tomlinson, Roger Ludlowe and Fairfield Woods middle schools in Fairfield. Division A consists of middle schools in Westport, Wilton, New Canaan, Ridgefield, Weston, and Darien.

“We don’t have ‘winners’ announced until the final meet [April 13],” explained NMS Math Club advisor Lisa Puma. “Each division competes separately in four meets [at each others’ schools]. The fifth meet is held jointly.”

In the meantime, she said, the Math Club meets weekly practicing math problems drawn from concepts ranging from pre-algebra to geometry.

“The students have a lot of fun!” she said.
