Newtown High School’s wrestling team competed against top state teams from elsewhere in Connecticut as well as Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island at the Colter Abely Tournament in Middletown on January 17.

The tournament follows a Journeyman-style format, with wrestlers divided into pools of four. Each wrestler competed in three round-robin matches, and the winner of each pool advanced to the semifinals to determine the first- through fourth-place finishers.

This tournament consistently brings together heavy hitters, and this year’s field featured top teams from four of the six New England states: Xavier of Middletown, third in Connecticut, Scituate, sixth in Rhode Island, Newtown, tenth in the state, and Bishop Hendricken, 19th in Rhode Island.

Nighthawks Antonio Arguello and Jake Maddox earned weight division championships, and several other Hawks had notable performances.

Noah Blair and Bohdan Petryshyn both earned sixth place, and Ryder Symes and Troy DaSilva each took seventh. Seamus Getzinger got his fourth varsity win of the season, earning him enough points for his varsity letter. New wrestler Gael Gomez recorded his first win via pinfall at his first career tournament.
