Marijuana Charge
Police said that at about 1:15 pm on January 19, school officials and the policeâs school resource officer were alerted that there was a classroom at Newtown High School which had a strong odor of marijuana within it, so they investigated.
A search of the classroom produced no evidence of marijuana, so the students within that classroom were then searched, according to police.
âOne of the students was found to be in possession of marijuana,â police said in a statement.
Police said they then charged that student with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana. That student, who was placed into the custody of a parent, was released on a written promise to appear in court on January 30, police said.
Because the person charged is under age 18, identity is shielded from disclosure by state law.

After learning that Newtown police held a Danbury Superior Court warrant for her arrest, Barbara OâReilly, 30, of Bristol went to the police station on the afternoon of January 23 and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court, police said.
Police said the charge stems from OâReilly having been charged on December 3 with speeding, driving with a suspended vehicle registration, and failure to have automotive insurance.
