Tribute To Joni Mitchell, March 1 In Sandy Hook
Readers are invited for a rare opportunity to hear an evening of Joni Mitchell’s best-loved songs with her own original arrangements, including her orchestration, performed live by local musicians. Song videos and background insights will trace her journey from 1970s folk icon through her sold-out live tours, and then her transition into an innovative jazz star.
“Joni Mitchell: Retrospective Tribute from Folk to Jazz” is planned for Sunday, March 1, 5-7 pm, at Aquila’s Nest Vineyards, 56 Pole Bridge Road in Sandy Hook. Doors will open at 4 pm.
Tickets are $30 each (age 18 and under free with adult); reservations are required and available at aquilasnestvineyards.com.
Cousins Maine Lobster will have a food truck on site, and additional concessions will be available for purchase. Guests are also welcome to bring their own food and snacks.
Outside alcohol beverages, water bottles, or any other beverages are not allowed.
Mitchell was first known for her iconic 1966 anthem “Both Sides Now,” which has been recorded by more than 1,700 artists. Since then, the finest jazz musicians in the world have lined up to work with the 11-time Grammy winner. Luminaries like Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, Wayne Shorter, Charles Mingus, and many more have all been thrilled to record and perform with her. Her fans may not be aware that their beloved Joni songs are all from jazz albums.
In 2015, Mitchell suffered a brain aneurysm, which left her unable to walk, talk, or perform. Hearing her referred to as “folk singer Joni Mitchell” in news coverage inspired vocalist, flutist, and percussionist Leslie Ballard to correct this misrepresentation. Together with a group of gifted fellow Mitchell followers, Ballard formed Joni Mitchell’s Jazz Tribute, playing to sold-out audiences from their first performance.
In a busy music career in New York City, Ballard regularly performed with a wide range of musical styles, including Amato Opera, Jerriese Johnson Gospel Choir, and Wexford Gaelic Trio, as well as singing backup vocals on albums.
Ballard will be joined on March 1 by the same musicians who performed the recent Panacea & Friends Twixtmas Show, also at Aquila’s Nest: brother Corky Ballard on vocals, guitar, and bass; Christian Martirano on vocals and keyboards; Tony Traina on drums and vocals; and Steve Moran on sax and melodica.
