Garner Inmate Charged After Murder For Hire Plot

By John Voket

Police said a plot in which an inmate at Newtown’s Garner Correctional Center allegedly contracted another inmate to kill his ex-girlfriend and her two young daughters was thwarted after the offending inmate was arrested last Thursday.

According to a release from the Department of Public Safety, the State Police Western District Major Crime Squad executed an arrest warrant January 20 on the accused in this investigation, Greg Lavoie, 53.

The arrest was related to what police described as a murder for hire investigation originating in August 2010 at Garner Correctional Facility. State Police detectives reportedly developed information during the criminal investigation that the accused, presently an inmate, attempted to solicit another inmate to kill his ex-girlfriend and her daughters.

The ex-girlfriend is a resident of West Hartford, but was not identified by name.

Lavoie is currently awaiting trial for five other domestic violence arrests, including a burglary into the ex-girlfriend’s home, which is being prosecuted in Hartford. He is presently being held on a $750,000 bond regarding these GA #14 cases.

According to State Police, following his arrest January 20, Lavoie was processed at Danbury Court and was charged with Criminal Attempt at Burglary II in violation of 53-a49/53a-102 and Inciting Injury to Persons/Property in violation of 53a-179a.

Lavoie was held on $25,000 bond for this latest criminal arrest.

State Police spokesman Lieutenant J. Paul Vance said that while the latest arrest was initially processed in Danbury, he indicated it would likely be combined with the other pending cases, all to be heard in Hartford Superior Court February 10.
