Police Arrest Local Man In Industrial Burglaries

By Andrew Gorosko

Police report they arrested a local man on a warrant this week, lodging six criminal charges against him in connection with burglaries that occurred early this month at Sandy Hook Hydro, a small hydroelectric plant located at Rocky Glen Mill at 75 Glen Road in Sandy Hook.

After learning that police held a warrant for him, Tyan McVay, 27, of Spring Trail, Sandy Hook, turned himself in at the police station on January 25, after which he was arrested, held on $10,000 bail and later arraigned on the charges at Danbury Superior Court, police said.

Following his court arraignment, McVay was released on $5,000 bail for a February 8 court appearance at which he is scheduled to enter pleas to the six charges.

Police charged McVay with second-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, first-degree criminal mischief, fifth-degree larceny, and criminal attempt to commit fourth-degree larceny.

Police report that on January 3, the hydroelectric plant’s owner called police to report that someone had illegally entered the building and removed several coils of copper and some electrical wiring. Entry to the premises had been made through an unlocked window, police said.

Also, on January 4, police responded to the same location after a worker had discovered that someone had again entered the facility and had attempted to cut through some copper wire, police said.

Police said that items including wire cutters, wrenches, and a utility knife had been left at the scene by the intruder.

Police added that through their investigation they identified McVay as a suspect in the burglaries. Discussions with McVay produced a confession, according to police.

Police had initially encountered McVay while on patrol at about 1:44 am on January 4, when they found him inside his vehicle, which was parked near an entrance to Rocky Glen Mill.

Police then investigated that situation and charged McVay with possession of narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle. McVay has pleaded not guilty to those charges, which are still pending in court.
