Marcia Barbara Spiegel, a 50-year resident of Newtown, passed away on June 2, 2025 from complications of a heart attack, just twelve days after the passing of her beloved husband of 65 years, Klaus Peter Spiegel.

Born in Jersey City, New Jersey on May 9, 1936, Marcia was the daughter of the late Maurice Kayatt and Eileen Urban Kayatt. She spent part of her childhood living with her grandmother and lost her father at the age of 18. These early experiences shaped her into the compassionate, resilient, and caring woman admired by all who knew her.

After graduating from high school, Marcia worked in New York City in the early days of computing, mastering punch cards and early computer systems. On April 23, 1960, she married Klaus Spiegel and devoted herself to raising their family. When her children grew older, she worked part-time as the beloved “salad lady” at Newtown Middle School. Later, she returned to school to gain new skills in office management and went on to serve the Town of Newtown for many years in various municipal departments, including the Building Inspector’s and Tax Assessor’s offices. She was also a familiar and trusted presence at the polls on election days, forming lasting friendships with colleagues she cherished throughout her life.

In her later years, Marcia and Klaus enjoyed boating and sailing on Candlewood Lake and sailing in the British Virgin Islands, where they made many close friends. Marcia also found great joy in gardening, tending her plants with the same care she gave to her family.

Above all, Marcia’s greatest joy was her family. As the matriarch, she was the heart of family gatherings, known for hosting holidays, cooking far too much food, and always being there for her children and grandchildren. She was a constant presence at her grandchildren’s activities and a loving, hands-on grandmother and great-grandmother.

Marcia is survived by her four children, Peggy Burg (Alan) of Seymour, Nancy Adams (Philip) of Southbury, David Spiegel of Thomaston, and Connie Zeller (David) of Freehold, N.J.; four grandchildren, Brandon Potter, Jason Adams (Lauren), Krista Adams, and Christina Spiegel; a great-grandchild, Sawyer Adams; two nephews; and one niece.

She was predeceased by her brother and his wife, Douglas and Judy Kayatt.

Marcia will be deeply missed and remembered for her warmth, devotion to her family, and lifelong service to her community.

A Celebration of Life for Marcia and Klaus was held at Candlewood East Club, Candlewood Lake with family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
