Distinguished Engineer And Longtime Resident
Donald L. Ferris, 83, of Newtown, died January 26, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Craig Avery of Sturbridge, Mass. He was born in Rye, N.Y., March 28, 1926, a son of Catherine (Bartehan) and Henry Ferris.
Mr Ferris served in the US Army during World War II with the 554th Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion.
He retired from Sikorsky Aircraft after 33 years of service. During his distinguished career as a design engineer, Mr Ferris was the holder of 41 patents and was awarded with a lifetime achievement award in engineering named in his honor. A 50-year resident of Newtown, he was a member of the Newtown Lions Club, and active in local politics.
In addition to his daughter and son-in-law, he is survived by three grandchildren; a sister; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Loretta; and son Chet; as well as two sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St Rose of Lima Church, Newtown, Monday, February 1, at 10:30 am. Interment with military honors will follow in St Rose Cemetery. Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, Sunday, January 31, from 2 to 5 pm.
