Hospitalâs Food Learning Series Launches On February 1
NEW MILFORD â New Milford Hospitalâs Dining Services Team and the Plow to Plate initiative will offer a series of interactive classes on nutrition and cancer on four consecutive Mondays from 9 to 11 am beginning February 1 at The Silo Cooking School, Hunt Hill Farm Trust, 44 Upland Road, New Milford.Â
The fee is $10 per class; scholarships are available.Â
This series is designed for anyone who is interested in healthy eating for cancer prevention and survivorship, and patients and caregivers of patients currently undergoing cancer treatment. Class facilitators will include Michele MacDonnell, RD, CDN, and Chefs Kerry Gold and Anne Gallagher.
Each session will include a discussion with a registered dietitian, and cooking demonstrations and food tasting led by an award-winning chef. They will offer an array of nourishing and delicious recipes for overall health, healing and recovery, featuring locally grown foods with special guest appearances from area farmers.Â
The class schedule is as follows:
Class 1: Overview of cancer prevention and survivorship guidelines:Â food, nutrition, and physical activity. Discussion of stocking your pantry and meals the whole family will enjoy with a healthful spin.
Class 2: Plant Sources: Choosing a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.Â
Class 3: Proteins and Fats: Healthy choices of protein and fat. Review of healthy cooking techniques and portion sizes. Recipes to include benefits of grass-fed beef and alternatives to animal protein. Â
Class 4: Symptom Management: Symptom management for those currently undergoing treatment with a focus on taste alterations, food safety, suggestions for increasing calories and protein, nutrition tips for well-being, and others. Recipes to include smoothies and easy, one-dish meals and soups.
