Youth Wrestlers Compete And Raise Money For Mats

Newtown’s youth wrestling program, Over The Top (OTT), has been busy this winter, having participated in 11 tournaments and league matches thus far. The team, which consists of 30 boys, ranging from kindergarteners through eighth-graders, have wrestled locally against Ridgefield, Pomperaug, Mill Ridge in Danbury, Stamford, Danbury, New Fairfield, and New Milford.

Outstanding performances by team elementary school veteran members Sean Arnold, Michael Gardner, Dylan Bartlett, and Ethan Ross, as well as stalwart second-year performers Stephen Leuci, Jack Zingaro, Ryan Straiton, Justin Bogdanoff, Shane Luzietti, Gren Paynter, and Isaac and Harrison Silverman have resulted in numerous medals. The elementary team will only get better as they await the return of veteran fifth-graders Ed Lovely and Anthony Falbo from injuries.

The middle school has seen its own share of success paced by Andy Hubina, Matt Gonzalez, Kevin Ross, Forest Speed, James Leuci, Josh Harrison, Luca Crudo, Joe Praino, and brothers Chris and Ed Lajoie. The addition of newcomers Joey Accousti, Mark Carpenter, Mark Dowling, William Henckel, and Sean Dauber has strengthened the team and contributed to the early-season winning ways.

It has been a very exciting year for the team as they have welcomed new participants as well as a new home for weekday practices.

Due to the renovations at the high school the previous practice room and practice mats became unavailable to the team. This development has prompted the relocation of practices to Hawley School, where space was available but forced the team to rely on well worn and aging practice mats. To alleviate the problem, the team has begun fundraising in an effort to purchase new mats.

Quality, safe wrestling mats are most wrestling’s clubs largest financial hurdle with large mats costing in excess of $10,000. Through the generous use of locations including Katherine’s Kitchen in Sandy Hook, Super Stop & Shop on South Main Street, the Newtown Deli, and the Newtown Youth Academy, the team was able to raise more than $1,400, recently, in a single morning at the Money For Mats Fundraiser at Super Stop & Shop.

On February 9, the team will hold another fundraiser at My Place Restaurant, 8 Queen Street, where 20% of all of the evening business, dine-in or take-out, will be donated to the club toward the purchase of the new mats.
