The record board may have survived (for now) one challenge last Friday night, but it succumbed to another when the Newtown and Watertown High School swim teams renewed their budding non-league rivalry.
One moment Kane Kunst of Newtown was coming within .19 seconds of snapping the school record in the 500-yard freestyle while another moment Steve Marcuccio of Watertown was breaking the pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke set last year by Tim Lux.
So there was enough excitement to detract from the fact that the visiting Indians, who made the trip without eight of their swimmers (seven were sick and one was away for a family funeral), dropped the Nighthawks to 2-7 on the season with a 98-86 decision.
The âHawks did snap their six-meet losing streak, however, on Tuesday afternoon in Milford with a win over the Foran/Jonathan Law Co-Op team.
Against Watertown, Kunst was a double winner, taking first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.09) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.95). Davis of Watertown was second to Kunst in both events â less than three seconds behind the 200 and nearly 50 seconds behind in the 500.
There were no other individual wins for the âHawks, but the 200-yard freestyle relay team turned in a rather remarkable performance with a first-place finish in 1:41.40 â over seven seconds ahead of Watertown. In the relay, Tim Robinson (26.51), Brian Kotwicki (25.57), Jeff Heller (24.8) and Kunst (23.87) all turned in stunning splits.
Meanwhile, Matt Fries (who had gone 25.14 in the 50-yard freestyle earlier in the meet) turned in his best time in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:04.02, but Adams of Watertown ran away with the event with a breathtaking time of 1:01.87.
In the 94-83 win over Foran/JonathanLaw on Tuesday, Fries was a double winner with a first-place finish in the 50 free (25.20) and 100 back (1:05.24). Kotwicki took first in the 100 free (56.65) and Kathleen Scharf was first in the 500 free (6:09.55).
