Daytime Book Group
Even a cloudy day is a good time to pick up a novel by Ernest Hemingway.
The Daytime Book Group at C. H. Booth Library will meet on Monday, February 9, at 1 pm, to discuss Ernest Hemingwayâs The Sun Also Rises. No matter how many times participants have read it, or how one feels about the manners and morals of the characters, most readers are unable to resist its spell.
The Sun Also Rises is a classic that really does live up to its reputation.
Jake Barnes, Hemingwayâs narrator, suffers from a mysterious war wound that has left him sexually incapable. Brett, the beautiful, doomed Englishwoman he adores, is both glamorous and unattainable.
A post-World War I ennui dominated by escape into alcohol provides the setting and mood. Weary of drinking and dancing in paris cafés, the expatriate gang decamps for the Spanish town of Pamplona to experience the âwonderful nightmareâ of a weeklong fiesta. With fiancé and ex-lover Cohn in tow, Brett breaks hearts all around until she falls, briefly, for the handsome teenage bullfighter Pedro Romero.   To borrow a copy of the book, stop by the library circulation desk on the Second Floor.
The Daytime Book Group meets on the Third Floor of the library in the Special Collections Room. New members are always welcome. Call the library at 426-4533 for additional information.
