Girls’ Hockey Team Experiencing Winning Ways
The South West United girls’ hockey team, comprising players from a variety of towns — including Newtown, with Karli Thompson and Morgan Kenny on the roster — has had a tremendous season thus far, posting a record of 7-1-1, pulling off some hard-fought overtime victories and a 4-1 win over previously unbeaten Amity of Woodbridge, at Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton on January 21. Six of the team’s wins have been decided by just one goal.
In the Amity game, South West United — which has had to come from behind on a regular basis — scored the first goal for the first time all winter long, and added to its lead, going up 2-0 before Amity got on the board. It was a 2-1 nail-biter heading into the third period before the team pulled away.
Thompson played a key role in the win over Amity and has been among the team’s top contributors. “She is an outstanding player and is a huge asset for us on defense,” Coach Carly Bokina said. “She plays hard, she’s smart, she hustles, she truly never gives up and that’s the type of player I love coaching. She made great passes last night — very proud of her.”
Kenny also represents Newtown, and the team has players from, among other schools, Masuk of Monroe — including goaltender Jen Velky. South West United, following three straight scheduled road games, is slated to return to home ice in Shelton Friday, February 6, when Guilford visits at 5:15 pm.
