Miss Porter’s Summer Challenge

FARMINGTON — Girls entering grades 7-9 will be challenged in science and math at Miss Porter’s School this summer, when they register for the Summer Challenge program. The boarding program runs from July 1 through 28, 2001. Limited financial aid is available. For more information, contact Christopher K. Hampton, Miss Porter’s School director of summer programs, at 860/409-3692.

This program for middle school girls emphasizes hands-on education and problem solving in math and science and field trips to scientific sites in New England. The curriculum is based on recent research that shows that girls are more likely to have continuing interest in math and science if encouraged in these subject areas while in middle school.

The program uses fun topics to explore biology, chemistry, physics, and math, such as “Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral?” and “Where in the Solar System is...?” Participants also have afternoon sports, self-defense instruction, and evening recreation.

Summer Challenge participants also have the opportunity to meet international students who are participating in another summer program. In The American Experience, girls ages 12 through 16 improve their English language skills and learn about US history, culture, and arts.
