The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will present Rick Daskam demonstrating a Monhegan-themed painting in oil on Wednesday, February 11 at 1:30 pm at Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street. The demonstration is open to the public and admission is free.

Readers should note the location, a move from the society’s long-standing tradition of presenting most programs at Newtown Meeting House.

Rick Daskam’s paintings have appeared in art galleries and juried exhibitions across the Connecticut and New York area. In 1998, he followed his passion of painting plein air, and began spending his time painting landscapes and farms in the local area surrounding his home.

Daskam first visited Monhegan Island in 2002 and fell in love with its rugged beauty. Returning every year for one to three weeks of “sun up to sun down” painting, the artist has produced some of his most memorable works.

Daskam is currently president of Hudson Valley Art Association. In 2004 he began entering juried art exhibitions and museum shows. Preferring to express his passion in oil, Daskam’s works have garnered him numerous awards from Butler Museum of American Art in Ohio, American Artists Professional League in New York, Hudson Valley Art Association, The Salmagundi Club, Lyme Art Association, and Rockport Art Association.

In 2015 Daskam had a show at the Uconn campus at Point Avery in Groton, and he had a solo show in 2017 of 38 paintings at Roxbury Library. In 2019 he was “Artist of the Year” on Monhegan Island Maine, with a season-long solo show.

Reservations are not needed for SCAN programs, but additional information may be available at scanart.org.

Rick Daskam began visiting Monhegan Island in 2002 and fell in love with its landscape and artistic possibilities. Shown here is one of the landscapes created during last year’s trips to the historic island off the coast of Maine.
