Reed At Conference
Reed At Conference
Lauren Reed of Sandy Hook was recently selected to participate in the National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC) in Washington, D.C., from March 1 to March 6. NYLC is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Lauren will be one of approximately 400 outstanding scholars from around the country at the conference.
The theme of NYLC is The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today. Throughout six days, Lauren will interact with a variety of personnel who operate within the three branches of government, the news media, and the international community.
Complementing a schedule of special meetings and briefings, Lauren will participate in a number of leadership skill-building activities and simulations. In one role-play activity titled âIf I were President,â students act as the president and cabinet members responding to an international crisis. Students will also participate in âTesting the Constitution,â in which they examine actual Supreme Court cases. The conference culminates with âModel Congress,â in which the scholars assume the roles of US Representatives and debate, amend and vote on proposed mock legislation.
NYLC is one of many programs hosted by the Congressional Youth and Leadership Council (CYLC). CYLC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization.
