After School Programs

At Hawley School Cover Many Interests

By Eliza Hallabeck

From playing chess to scrapbooking, 138 Hawley School students have been attending after school programs for the yearly six weeks of courses event. As PTA overseer for the program this year, Kathleen Mulligan said this week that the classes are near to being entirely volunteer run.

Classes at the school run for six weeks, and are held Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

“The entire program is run by volunteers, parents former Hawley students, middle school and high school students, and community citizens,” said Ms Mulligan by email.

After school at Hawley on Thursday, February 4, Ms Mulligan said the courses cost between $30 and $35 each for the students, and at the end of each course the students bring something home as a souvenir. For example, Ms Mulligan said, each student in the yoga course will bring their yoga mat home at the end of the six-week course.

The classes offered this year are: Fun with Model Trains and Railroading coordinated by the Danbury Railway Museum; Fitness and Nutrition for Super-Kids run by Jill Patterson, RD, registered dietitian for Newtown Public School with Chartwells; Hip Hop Class for Girls and Boys run by The Graceful Planet;, Pinewood Derby Car Construction run by Hawley parent Tom Tavar; Chess run by Newtown High School Chess Club members Matt Pruner and Cole Baldino; Scrapbooking run by Hawley parent Paula Hughes; Basketball Drill & Skills for Girls run by Meaghan Harkins and Kathleen Mulligan; Basketball Drill & Skills for Boys run by Michael Mossbarger and Kathleen Mulligan; Lego Creations run by former Hawley student Zachary Weiland and Hawley parent Susan Burbank; Yoga Adventures run by registered yoga teacher Karen Pierce; No Bake Cooking Class run by school parent Erin Varga; and Recycled Art run by Sharon Longo.

Volunteers assisting classes or with dismissal process are Marabeth Pereira, Kristen Bonacci, Sue Reilly, Doreen Helstern, Sheryl Adams, Debra Nahmias, Cathy Reiss, Ann Hitchcock, Dawn Karp, Isabella Souza, Renee Marino, and Michael Teixeira.

Faith Pereira, Zachary Weiland, Matt Pruner, Cole Baldino, Meaghan Harkins, and Michael Mossbarger are student volunteers working toward confirmation or community service hours.
