Sixth Annual Battle Of The Books Taking Shape
Sixth Annual Battle Of The Books Taking Shape
The C.H. Booth Library invites young adults to test their knowledge of four selected books at the 6th Annual Battle of the Books trivia contest, scheduled for Saturday, March 27 (snow date of March 28), at 1 pm. Signups are open until March 8 for Newtown students or residents in grades 5 to 8, including homeschoolers. Students can compete in teams of three to five people. There is a limit of 16 teams.
The Battle of the Books is a Jeopardy-style format in which each team hears the same question together, writes their answers, and display the answers at the same time.
This year, teams will read Attack of the Turtle by Drew Carlson, Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy, Jeremy Fink & the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass, and Paint the Wind by Pam Muñoz Ryan. Books are available in the young adult section of the C.H. Booth Library.
Teams must be registered at the library no later than March 8. A complete information packet is available when registering. Online registrations are not available. Teams must also submit trivia questions to be used in the contest by March 8, at 5 pm.
One or more team members must attend the March 24 practice round (snow date March 25).
Last year, 53 young people, on 13 teams, participated in the Battle of the Books. Prizes are awarded to winning teams. The first place team members win a $20 gift certificate to an area bookstore. The second place team members win a $10 gift certificate to an area bookstore. The winning team membersâ names will also be inscribed on a plaque in the Young Adult Department, and each member may select a book that the library will purchase and dedicate in their name.
More details can be found in the young adult area on the second (main) floor of the library, or online at chboothlibrary.org, or by contacting young adult librarian Margaret Brown at 203-426-4533 or childrenâs librarian Alana Bennison at 203-426-3851.
