Snowfalls that blanketed the area February 13 into Valentine’s Day postponed sporting events both days, and an anticipated subsequent storm made a change to one athletic event (the indoor track and field State Open) and threatened others slated for Saturday, February 15.

The South-West Conference (SWC) gymnastics championships, originally scheduled to take place on February 13, were postponed to Wednesday, February 19. The competition will be held at 5 pm at New Milford High School — the same time and location as was originally in place.

Newtown High School’s hockey game with Joel Barlow of Redding, already postponed from its originally scheduled date of February 5 because of snow, and bumped to February 13, had to be rescheduled again. The new date — Mother Nature permitting — is Friday, February 28. Faceoff is set for 7:50 pm at Danbury Ice Arena. Newtown has four games scheduled before then, including at least one that also is threatened by snow — a February 15 visit to Tri-Town in Enfield.

Newtown’s girls’ and boys’ basketball teams had their February 14 games moved to February 17 and 19, respectively. The girls will visit Masuk in Monroe for a 7 pm tipoff on Monday, February 17. Two days later, the boys will host Masuk for a 7 pm contest. Both teams also have regularly-scheduled games set for February 18 — the girls at home against Bunnell of Stratford and the boys at Bunnell, both at 7 pm.

The track and field State Open, originally scheduled to take place on February 15, has been postponed for a couple of days. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference made this announcement on February 14: “Due to challenges as result of the recent storms and threat of additional inclement weather, the CIAC Indoor Track & Field State Open scheduled for Saturday has been rescheduled for Monday, February 17, at 3 pm at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.”

The SWC wrestling championships, as of the afternoon of February 14, were still on the slate for February 15 (beginning at 9:30 am at Pomperaug High School in Southbury).
