‘BLACK LIGHT: FINDING THE HIDDEN BEAUTY OF YOUR GLASS’ AT CAPE COD GLASS CLUB ALICE WALSH

ak/lsb set 2/15 #729123

SANDWICH, MASS. — The next meeting of the Cape Cod Glass Club will be in the Hirschmann Theater of the Sandwich Glass Museum on Tuesday, March 4. The museum is at 129 Main Street. Refreshments will be served at 1 pm, and a business meeting will commence at 1:30 pm.

The club will welcome Alice Walsh of Foxborough, Mass., who will speak on a subject dear to her heart. She will discuss the use of ultraviolet light, also known as “black light,” as a tool in identifying various types of glass. Using this tool, collectors will learn to identify and appreciate glassware that contains uranium as a colorant.

This meeting is open to the public, and the audience is encouraged to bring examples of vaseline, uranium and custard glass, as well as various types of opaque glass for examination.

Walsh is well known to glass enthusiasts in the greater Boston area. She is an antiques dealer who has participated in the Sandwich Glass Museum’s Cape Cod Glass Show, is a past president of the Founders Chapter of the National American Glass Club, and the editor of the national club’s newsletter Glass Shards.

The Cape Cod Glass Club is a voluntary, not-for-profit chapter of the National American Glass Club. It is dedicated to the study and appreciation of glass regardless of the type or period, with emphasis on American glass. To that end, the parent organization holds an annual seminar in May and publishes a scholarly journal that members receive three times yearly. The Cape Cod chapter meets monthly from October to December and from March to June. Activities include formal lectures, informal study sessions and visits to museums and working glassmakers.

The club is open to new members. For information, contact membership chair Dorothy Schatz at 508-428-2141 or program chair Betsy Hewlett, 508-362-6875.
